I own a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer 6cyl. Bought the car with low miles & have babied it since. After buying this car I started hearing about how big of a problem the transmissions are. Now 2 years after buying, I found this out for myself. First my my O/D off light began flashing, then check engine light came on. I lost second gear, and had to drive home in 3rd gear. I found out that it is going to cost over $2500+ to fix the problem. Ford should be held accountable for this problem. I have heard far too many complaints and no one has done anything about it.

I called Ford concerning this problem. O/D/ light flashes, then error message check transmission, then check engine light stays on. It seems that the transmission solenoid pack is the problem but there is no recall replacement for this problem. I had ordered a so called OEM Ford 5 Solenoid pack recommended fix for this problem from USA Industries in Bay Shore NY. It was suppose to be NEW FORD OEM update. After several hundreds of dollars buying it and installing this wonder part, the car did exactly the same thing. I am having my Mechanic run the new codes to find out what the problem is. When he ran the code earlier it came up PO731 2nd gear shift and several solenoid numbers. This so called replacement was to be the new up grade for transmission problems such as mine, 5R55 Explorer, Mountaineer 2002.
When I contacted the company for their refund, since I was still in the refund parameter, this Genius claimed he was not refunding my moneys, claimed we misdiagnosed the problem and became a internet tough guy. I had to laugh at this moron, if this is the way he conducts his business I am sure the IRS will be interested in his last 10 years tax returns..
But back to the issue, FORD will not repair this problem under the recall list and claims it's not a warranted recall item. I have ventured through the net looking for this same problem and I thought I was alone but found over 500 complaints in various sites about the same problem.. So when are we going to get together and file a joint suit or complaint against Ford Motor Co. through the US Attorneys Generals Office?? I know I am going that route after USA Industries if EBay can not resolve this issue. I guess it's time to put my government years into use. If any one wants to discuss a possible legal actions let me know.

Love my suv. The problems started with heater not switching, it just stays on 1 setting. Then there is a water leak on passenger side. Took it in and they put in a new window cowl seal, didn't help. Transmission started messing up in March. Lights flashing etc. Quoted $3,500 to rebuild, haven't fixed it yet. I also have emblem in back cracked. Looks like possible water leak there. I wish a recall would at least be done on this horrible transmission.
