Car would not shift properly. The transmission was not designed to handle a fifth gear and therefore it burns out. It also screws up 2nd gear, throwing the whole transmissions ratio off and you have to replace the whole thing instead of just being able to repair the gears.

I bought this vehicle 3 months ago. It only has 86,000 miles and the transmission goes out... without any sort of warning. I have researched this fr the past week and it seems that this is an all to common occurrence. And with an estimated cost to fix of 4,000- that is not cheao fix. Ford NEEDS to be held responsible for this one!

My car has 132,000 miles and yes its a 2003 and well maintained. Driving to work today the O/D light starting flashing _ check transmission not what you want to see in the morning.
I'm not sure what my next step will be as I'm not prepare to spend anywhere from $2400-3500 to have it fix, and that my problem this truck still looks like it came off the showroom floor so do I spend the money or do I look for something else. I learned that transmission are a funny thing because once we replace them they never act the same again.
It has to be a design flaw as you can not check the transmission fluids yourself just had the car service three weeks ago everything was find....... there should have been some indication that service would be required but nothing just sudden death
No more Ford products Oh but wait does any one make a reliable car these days???

29 days after we got this Mountaineer our O/D light came on and we called the dealer and they said bring it in and let them check it out. We did to find out that our transmission went out and we had to pay a portion of the bill which was 800.00 dollars. In 2010, a year later, the same problem happened again. We had to find someone else to put in another transmission, we paid 1,435.00. In 2011 and we rode the mountaineer about 3 months after that, then the transmission went out again and we parked it.
Then we found Jimmy Transmission in Cleveland MS and we had to pay $909.50 in 2012 to replace the transmission and the flywheel $300.00, for it was cracked, and a brake switch broke. We could not get it to go into park, we had to unhook the battery cable, we could not lock our doors. We rode the Mountaineer, about a year later we had to find another transmission guy which was in Greenville MS and the name of the place is National Transmission Co.,Inc. The transmission would not back up, that was another transmission that was $1,658.50.
In 2013, now there is a problem with the motor. it won't keep its speed, it's up and down or picks up speed when it wants. We have changed spark plugs, coil pack, 2 times the oil and the oil filter, the throttle position sensor, for the Mountaineer. So we have put a lot of money in this Mountaineer. I put the wrong year in that we purchased the Mercury Mountaineer, it is 2010 and not 2008.And we are still spending money on it.
