Car was in driveway. Was fine the evening before. Went out in the morning to find the crack in lift gate. It was unusually warm the day before, then temps dropped significantly that Winter night. I believe it was due to expansion/contraction of the lift gate material. Was ultimately replaced under auto comprehensive insurance, although they initially tried to put it under collision portion of policy. Body shop had to confirm that it was not due to collision.

Like EVERY mountaineer that is on the road today, the rear hatch developed a crack around the mercury emblem. Why does Ford not do a customer service recall????????????????

Ford/Mercury know this is a problem with all Explorers and Mountaineers of this year model and yet will do nothing of it. When you pay as much for a vehicle as we do, you don't expect to have this type of problem with it.

Mountaineer driven for approx 9000 miles per year. After months of one of the most frigid Winters I can remember in PA, and then a significant warm up into the 60's this week, now back in the teens, went out yesterday and found a crack starting from the window line down around the mercury emblem on the rear hatch of m y 03 Mountaineer. Having a body shop look at it today, but insurance agent tells me it is very strange for a crack to just appear ... which I know is not so with plastics and fiberglass and is due to expansion and contraction with weather extremes. Will see what happens and what the body shop says.

own a 2003 mercury mountaineer v6 love the truck with a few problems like interior the center fold up set handle came off dealer said thats not there fault, also cracked body peice on back hatch below the back window that has been fixed or address,as a costumer that works hard to earn a pay check,we need the most out of every dollar and the assurance that what we buy is of some value. I would like these problems and any others address and resolved. One last thing the paint on top of the truck was so thin it started coming off also in 2006.

I have a 2003 mercury mountaineer and the lift gate has cracked around the mercury emblem. I have seen other mountaineers with exact same cracking around emblem, they should do a recall.

After reading other people's issues with the cracked rear panel on their Mercury Mountaineers, Fords and Lincoln's, I realized that my car was NOT VANDALIZED! I had mistakenly believed my 2003 Mercury Mountaineer had been vandalized in August 2015 because of the crack above and below the rear emblem on the back liftgate! These vehicles are very expensive and very expensive to repair! The car manufacturers need to be held LIABLE for their on-purpose, crappy products! I WILL NEVER BUY A MERCURY, LINCOLN OR FORD PRODUCT AGAIN IN MY LIFE! I will tell everyone I know not to! This is the crappiest, over priced piece of junk that I have ever heard of on the market still be sold today! These intentional THIEVES need to be held accountable for their over-priced, cheap crap they sell on the market!
