The check engine light has been going on and off at will for over a year. Last winter I took it to my family's mechanic (very reputable) and he said he couldn't find a problem; he suspected a computer glitch and told me that I could either have him just shut the light off or have the car dealer service it and "reboot" the computer. I opted to take it to the dealer and they ended up finding $400 worth of other things that needed to be fixed, afterwhich the car didn't perform any better and the light still comes on and goes off any time it darn well pleases.

This car now has 105,000 miles. It was a gift from my mother-in-law because she got a new car (Toyota, thank God). Even before the warranty expired she took it to the dealer several times. Each time she had to spend a couple hundred dollars, and they never really fixed. The CHECK ENGINE light is ALWAYS on, and both Ford and Mercury dealers cann't fixt it! This car sucks! I'm trading in for a Toyota or Honda.
