The "Check Engine Light" went on and the diagnostic code was P1744 which indicates a transmission problem - more specifically the Torque Converter Clutch solenoid and/or electrical circuit. This is apparently the same problem others have described for the Ford Taurus. A call to a local Mercury dealer gave me a range of possible prices from $100 to $2000. If the Torque Converter needs to be replaced, their hourly rate is $65.00, and for (I estimate) 8 hours the labor charge would be $520. I'm presently getting prices for parts, but I'm afraid it will be over $1000 and closer to $1500 - 2000. I plan to get a 2nd opinion from another repair shop.
