The contact owns a 2000 Mercury Sable. While driving 35 mph over a bump, the contact heard an abnormal noise underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that both springs had fractured. The mechanic also diagnosed that the brakes and ball joints needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the springs were not replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 200,000.

I just bought a 2000 Mercury Sable, when backing out of the driveway and making a turn, I felt something pop & a spring coil on the drivers side broke.

I drove the car home after purchasing it and it was wobbling and I pulled off of the highway and did not know why it was making a loud noise. The mechanic siad a wheel bearing is broken on a tire.

My Mercury Sable 2000, (I am the original owner), was taken in for new tires and the technician reported the rear brakes were low and replaced both rear brake drums and cylinders. Upon further inspection he noticed the spring on the rear strut drivers side had fractured. We are not sure when this happened, although we are sure it did not happen at the garage because there was rust between the fracture joints. The spring narrowly missed puncturing the side wall of the tire. I do remember Ford had a recall for a shield on the front strut springs and this car was taken to the dealership for this repair. I have seen many references on this site about the defect on the rear struts. Why hasn't anything been done about this? I'm afraid to drive the vehicle with the oem Ford struts front and rear. Btw the garage quoted $800 to replace the rear struts only.

After being parked for approximately 2 months over the winter, I went to inspect the Sable, and found a flat tire ( front passenger side), upon further inspection, I found that the coil spring had fractured, shot downward, and punctured the inner sidewall of the tire. The coil is not significantly rusted, and retains almost all of the original protective coating to prevent rust. On a ten year old car, I would think this is normal wear, but I remember that my 2000 Sable was recalled for the exact same problem, as was the 2001 model, and I have now found over 200 reports of the same problem in the 2003 Sable, and would like to know why a recall was never issued for this model.

My daughter was driving my 2000 Mercury Sable around a curve to the left when the rear of the vehicle began to slide to the left causing her to loose control and strike 2 guard rails,2 vehicles traveling in the opposite direction and then head-on into a stone retaining wall. Vehicle was severely damage and my daughter suffered a minor head injury. The airbags did not deploy even after striking the wall head-on. We are concerned that the rear coil springs were defective, rusted and may have cause her to loose control and the rear-end of the vehicle to slide to the left. 1 week prior to vehicle crash/incident, the rear end of the vehicle slid to the left on dry pavement while turning to the right. Vehicle tires were fairly new and in good condition. Please review the 2000 Mercury Sable for defects in the rear coil springs and the airbag deployment failure.

Wife was driving with our 15 month old and 1 one the way when she heard this very loud clanking noise. It sounds like its coming from both wheel wells in the rear.

Rear coil springs broke....

My 2000 Mercury Sable has had a history of broken coil springs. Due to the hazardous situation I feel something needs to be done! Ford had a recall on the front springs but not the back. My back springs have just been discovered to be broken and I'm extremely concerned about how safe consumers are while driving this car! this spring could easily destroy the tire causing a catastrophic accident evolving everyone on the road! currently it's being fixed as the new springs are on order!

Broken front and rear springs on Mercury Sable 4 door car. The front springs broke first and was very expensive to repair and if the broken spring had it the tire I would have crashed on the freeway. The rear spring broke last week and did destroy the tire and again my life was threaten by a crash. Ford only recognized that they would place spring guards on the front springs to save they responsibility from have front tires destroyed and killing drivers. Ford will not admit they have a problem; I spent one half hour on the phone with them at the corporate office this week. Because my car is older than 5 years, they will not even extend any consideration for the huge repair costs including new tires that were destroyed. I have owned many cars the last forty years and was a licensed master auto mechanic in the state of Michigan and also a voc. Ed teacher in power mechanics ( automechanics). This is a very serious public issue and when tires are ruined by the broken springs the car will go out of control !

- the contact called regarding a 2000 Mercury Sable. In April 2006, the contact received a recall letter for a boot to be put on the coil springs. The Ford dealer refused to put the boot on because the contact had put aftermarket struts on the vehicle. In October 2006, the contact started hearing a thumping noise, and the vehicle would vibrated. The contact had repairs done at a Ford dealer, replaced the back springs, tie rod and ball joints. On 11/24/2006, the contact was traveling at 40 mph, when she heard a loud noise and pulled over because she thought she had a flat tire. The contact smelled something burning. The vehicle was towed to a Ford dealer, and the contact was told the driver front spring broke. The dealer was willing to pay for the spring, but not for the tire and the tie rod. The sway bar link, struts, ball joints and cv boot were replaced. Updated 02/27/07.

Problems with tire equipment deflating. While attempting to back out of a garage the vehicle would not move. The consumer then heard a tremendous noise followed by hissing. The consumer exited the vehicle and noticed that he driver's side front tire was deflated. It was later determined that the strut and spring had snapped puncturing the tire. The vehicle was towed to a local repair facility to be repaired. The consumer requested reimbursement but was told that since the vehicle was not towed to a Ford dealer the parts could not be guaranteed.

The engine has a heavy spark knock and has been repaired 5 times. The driver seat does not move forward when someone is sitting in it. When car is first put in reverse, it will roll forward. When slowing from 60+ mph, the car shakes really bad and also rides very rough when speeding up from 65+mph. These cars seem to have a lot of engine, transaxle problems. Maybe a recall is in order. My car has been int he shop 60 out of 290 days. I have dealt with rental cars and repairs in excess of $20K. Please help!
