About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
Driving down street, stopped to turn, then accelerated when transmission went out, no warning signs just went out, no reverse or forward use. Sent car to repair shop and told no codes show up on computer no signs of leaks or damage to transmission, bad torque converter. Keeping old converter after hearing of similar problems with other vehicles that share same transmission. Called several transmission shops and Ford dealerships and it seems to be a fairly common problem.

I was driving home from work when my car told me to have my transmission checked. I took it to the shop and the mechanic told me that I have to have my transmission rebuilt. The car only has 70,000 miles on it, and I bought it when it had 31,000 miles in 2007. The mechanic proceeded to inform me that the make and model of my car has continuous problems with the transmission, and that he alone had fixed at least 10 or 12 within the past few months.

While driving and after coming to a complete stop the automatic transmission would not change gears. W/O warning no previous car problems, regular vehicle check-ups and the transmission goes out. I have been told by a transmission repair shop that it is the converter. After calling that shop and a Ford dealership they all have had stories about this piece going out in the transmission and basically indicated that I need a new transmission or a rebuilt one. Keep in mind this is a 2005 Mercury Sable.
