Strong smell of gasoline in passenger compartment. Problem comes and goes. Mechanics do not know why. I called the dealer but they (3037611560) stated that my vehicle's VIN number wasn't among those recalled for the same problem.

I own a 1995 Mercury Villager. I purchased the vehicle from a used car dealer. Since I purchased this vehicle three years ago, I have had a recurrent problem with smelling gas fumes in the passenger compartment of the van. I have taken the van to a Ford dealership, an independent mechanic, a Chevrolet dealership, and an independent service station. No one seems to be able to locate the source of the gas smell. I am concerned about my safety and the safety of my children. Gas fumes are volatile, and if they are strong enough for me to detect the odor, then I feel the van is unsafe to drive. I have tried several times to have the problem repaired, but no one seems able to detect the source of the problem. I have contacted Ford Motor Company directly, but I received very little information from them. I have read several complaints on the internet of other vehicle owners with the same problem. I have read where other vehicle owners have contacted Ford Motor Company regarding this problem. When I called Ford, they told me they had received no other complaints of this type. I feel there is a problem that should be investigated. My main concern is the safety issue of driving a defective vehicle.

The van started to sputter and the engine cut out while driving on the highway at 60 mph. I managed to coast to the side of the highway and notice smoke entering the passenger compartment. The smoke didn't smell like steam from overheating but a thick black smoke. I moved a safe distance from the van and contacted the police and fire department. The engine compartment burst into flames by the time the fire department arrived. The van was a total loss and the estimated damage was $13000. The insurance company wrote off the vehicle and only paid $9000. I suspect the problem of fuel vapours (appears to be common in the Mercury Villager) in the engine compartment were ignited by a spark from the plug wires from rain entering the engine compartment at highway speed. The dealer had replaced the fuel filler gasket under a recall a month earlier.

This problem of raw fuel smell occurs mainly in the winter months but has occured in the summer on occasion. The van has been to the dealer approx. 10 times for this problem. This condition has caused me to leave the vehicle outside garage when it occurs for fear of the fuel vapors and hot water heater and furnace. Mercury cannot find out what the problem is. They have fixed several items thinking it was fixed, but to no avail. My wife has been driving twice in a snow storm when the condition occured. She had to roll down the windows to get fresh air, if she would have been stranded on the road, no telling what she would have done. Mercury has been advised of the problem and has put our vehicle under extended warranties to cover the problem when it occurs. Also, they have offered us a $1000 voucher for the purchase of another Mercury vehicle. The voucher is not the answer, nor is the extended warranty. This condition could prove to have long term health effects on my now 4yo daughter and my wife as fuel odors (benzene)is cancer causing. My family has been exposed to abnormal amounts of these products. This problem needs to be fixed for the sake of the safety of the families that depend on these vehicles. I noticed that there are several complaints logded and 1 tsb issued by Mercury in regards to a fuel cap needing sealed (which they have done and wasnt the problem!) thank you for your attention in this matter.
