I bought my 2005 Mini Cooper about 17 months ago. Its mileage was only 25,000 miles. When it reached around 48K miles the CVT 6-speed transmission started clunking and shifting late. When I put it in sport mode and downshift from third to second, it grabs so harshly that the tires squeal for a long time.
I was given a quote for around $5K to have it repaired. I did some research online and found out that there was a class-action lawsuit against BMW for defective CVT transmissions back in 2011 or 2012 but the deadline was 2014. This is probably more that the worth of the car but I love it and am bot sure what to do.
Thanks,

I've been having shifting issues with my automatic 2005 Mini Cooper s convertible. I see a ton of well-documented complaints, lawsuits, settlements, etc. regarding the CVT transmission in these older model Mini Coopers. I brought my Mini in to the service department in Grand Rapids a few weeks ago, explained my issue, and they hooked it up to a computer, changed the timing of the shift and sent me home as they told me that the problem is solved.
Three weeks later I'm back in for service with the same complaint of major jerkiness in the shifting and 45 minutes later they tell me that I need a new transmission. I have 68,000 miles on this car and had it serviced consistently and babied for 10 years. With the labor and parts fees, the final cost is over $10,000. My car isn't worth that!
I can't believe that there was a settlement in 2014 for this very issue and after calling the corporate office and gripping on social media (Mini Facebook Page), Mini won't step up and take ownership of their crappy manufacturing issue of this sh*tty CVT transmission. What does it take for a recall????? Mini tells me...only after I complained on social media, that they will pay 25% of a new transmission.
My car should not need a new transmission at 68,000 miles so no, that's not a deal. Take responsibility for your mistake, Mini, or your gonna be settling again here in Michigan with another class action lawsuit.

While coming to a stop and downshifting, transmission clunks very bad and at times car stalls. I have taken it to two authorized dealers and spent over a $1,000 for them to tell me it needs a new transmission that cost $8.000. The car has 85,000 miles and I love the car, but I noticed it runs well for a short period until it warms up, several miles, then it stalls. I am 73 years old and this was to be my final car, you know buy BMW and you get the best hahaha

Sounds like it's a common complaint with this transmission. Already spent $4,000 to have convertible top repaired and now this relegates the car to a cute paperweight. Will we ever get satisfaction from a class action suit?
