This is obviously a factory defect and should not be at the owners expense to repair. However, if you don't complain about this before your warranty expires you're stuck with paying for the repairs.

Update from Mar 26, 2015: finally traded my mini off after more issues involving timing chain, pvc valave failure, and oxygen sensor failure. All requiring factory parts only.
