Days later, my son was driving the car in "charge mode" going uphill, and despite pressing the gas pedal, the car would not accelerate. The following day, while driving 60+ mph on the freeway, my speed dropped again and I was unable to accelerate for periods of time.
Dealer & Diagnostic History:
Puente Hills Mitsubishi: Failed to return calls/emails. I was told they lack a PHEV technician and was referred elsewhere.
Victorville Mitsubishi: I drove 40 miles to Victorville (having to use "charge mode" repeatedly to make the drive). The vehicle remained at the dealership for 12 days.
Diagnostics Executed: The certified PHEV technician found a failed 12V battery, which was replaced. The issue was escalated to Mitsubishi engineers, who recommended cell smoothing and battery auto capacity measurement.
Outcome: After these procedures, the vehicle still suffers from the exact same power-loss issue.
Despite the dealership technician pushing for a hybrid battery replacement, Mitsubishi corporate refused because the car has not thrown a specific fail code. I purchased this vehicle on February 20, 2020, it has 61,000 miles, and all routine maintenance has been maintained. Loss of motive power on a high-speed road is a major safety defect, and refusing warranty coverage when the vehicle fails to operate safely is completely unacceptable.
