2000 Nissan Altima Dashboard Gauges turn on and off while driving, Gas Needle, Speedometer drop to zero or lock at what ever speed you are going at the time when it loses power. Car can be parked still displaying 60mph, the odometer turns off completely or the numbers become distorted. It will eventually turn back on but it may be mins or days later.

It has happened a few times over the past few months, but the incidents are getting closer together. Driving along and suddenly the speedometer goes to zero, the hot/cold indicator goes to zero, as well as the RPM indicator. This may last only a few minutes or until the next time I start the car. Very annoying to not know what speed I am going. A mechanic said it is a wiring problem and it could take very little time to find the faulty wire, or it could take hours, so haven't tried to get it repaired as I have no idea of what the labor cost might be.

Gauge cluster quits randomly. Started about 8 months ago. Doesn't seem to matter if driving or parked. I've checked battery connections, fuses, belts, all check out ok. I'm going to keep a voltmeter connected to the cigarette lighter so I can monitor battery voltage.

I own a 2000 nissan altima. Just recently purchased from my brother. The problem has occured before for him too, so not sure how long it has been doing it. When i am driving, the temp, speed, an rpm gages will just completly shut off for a matter of time. Somedays it will remain off for 5 min an other days it will stay off the whole time i am driving the car.
Recently i was on the beltway, going about 65 mph, when the car would not accelerate anymore. I had to let off the gas, shift it to neutral, an than shift it back into drive, just to be able to accelerate the car. This happened bout every 2 minutes that day untill i was off of the beltway. Very scary situation to be in. At first, i just assumed that it was something that was only wrong with my car, but after reading about others with the same problems, it is staring to look like it may be a defect that nissan needs to do something about.

Same Problem as others. On a hot day or a long drive the instruments drop out and stop working. This is inconvenient and annoying, but when I was 40 minutes into a 90 minute drive home, the accelerator stopped responding. I was driving at 65 mph, and the gas pedal stopped working. I popped the car from Drive to Neutral at 55 mph and then back to Drive. This was a quick fix that had to be repeated several times to make it home.

Driving on the expressway and all of a sudden the dash is dead. I have no idea how fast I'm going, how much gas I have, what the rpm's are or the engine temp. Mechanic says its not a fuse, so I ask him to check the wiring and he says he will have to take the whole dash apart, so knowing the labor on a job like that would be ridiculous I just figured I would deal. Now, if my car is left sitting in the sun too long, when I turn the car on, no gauges, dead dash! Ugh! Nissan really needs to own up to the fact that this is a mechanical flaw in their design.

If I happen to take a long drive , once the console has gotten warm all the displays cease to work. The cruise control ceases to work, the speedometer and all controls on the dashboard look as though the auto is off. The speedometer is drops to zero. Gas gauge looks as if it's on empty. Temperature gauge reads cold. It's like a switch goes off and everything there stops working. This usually happens if I'm taking a long highway trip or am doing a lot of city driving on a particular day. The car still runs fine, however. ONce it's turned off and stays off awhile, all controls resume working again. I've taken it to the dealer and was told that unless it's occurring when I bring it in, they don't know what it is. I just stopped asking and have lived with it.
