I too have had a problem with shaking while idling for sometime now. Went to a lot of mechanics to have the problem diagnosed. No one could find the problem. The engine light would go on and off intermittently but the car was drivable. Finally, today, I logged on to this site and realized so many others have had a similar problem. Wish I knew about this site a long time ago. I have a mechanic who is fixing the problem now. All I can say is work with your mechanic. Mine is reliable and is coming under price what others have reported paying to fix the job. I am also looking to sign on with the person who is trying to file a class action lawsuit against Nissan. This is definitely a defect in the 2000's and they should foot the tab for the repairs.

Seems to be happening on all 2000 Nissan Altimas, at about 100,000 miles.
Engine shakes. Check engine light comes on, goes off after 5 starting cycles. Then will come on again etc.
Mechanic said he has seen this gasket problem many times for this model Nissan.

My complaint is in regards to my 2000 Nissan Altima GXE 2.4 . #4 cylinder -getting air into fuel/air mixture due to premature failure of the intake manifold gasket due to heat around the cylinder 4 area from the EGR pipe which bakes the gasket into leaking. Diagnostic test at local mechanic gave same code but they did not know what it meant and wanted to troubleshoot (sounded like they wanted to make $). Then I called Nissan dealership w/ code and engine light going on and off and they said, casually, it just might be an emission thing and to bring it in (a more expensive suggestion, of course.) I have found that Nissan dealerships are in it for the money. Only go if you are covered by warranty. Great local mechanic here (Denver) is fixing it for $500. I hope this is all I have to put into it for a while. The idler pulley seems to be noisy but has been or the past 60,000 miles.

My 2000 GXE began to idle rough, almost stalling, and the check enging light has come on twice in two weeks. The first time, it went out with tightening of the gas cap. But the second time, no luck. Computer check revealed cylinder 4 -- big surprise -- and we know now that this is diagnostic of a leaking intake manifold. Hundreds of complaints on the internet. But no satisfaction from Nissan.
It is incomprehensible to me that Nissan has not issued a recall on this problem. It is widespread and common. Mechanics know of it, customers know about it. Nissan knows about it, and they have done nothing. Have we no recourse but to pay hundreds of dollars to repair a problem that is common and predictable to this model? Can you say "class action"?
