Replace the both cam and crank sensors and still no recall. Nissan doesn't take care of their customers.

As I have read below, we are all akin to this troublesome machine. Two days ago my altima did not start, thinking it was a dieing battery I called for road side asistance for a jump-start. The service man spent well over 40 mins trying to diagnose the problem, but being that he was only being paid to jump-start the car his help was limited. Later on that day the car started again but only with more difuculty. Drove to work and back just fine except I did feel a change in power while accelerating. The next day it started but died on me at the gas station. I called a for a tow to the nearest mechanic costing me $160, my girlfriend had to rent a car to get to work at the hospital. You see where this is going? The mechanic ran a diagnostic and it read a cam sensor problem.

After replacing the cam sensor which was full of dirty oil, the car started. That was four hours ago. I drove it back home and hope that when I wake up this NISSAN ALTIMA 2004 SL would be kind enough to start. I also hope that this new cam sensor which is made in Mexico, was designed in a much better fashion then what came stock.

One would think that such if such a simple device has the potential to make the car useless better care would have been put into the design. I will call a nissan dealer and inquire about this VIN number recall.

Wish me luck.

I bought this car a year ago at 72000 miles, since then it was working fine untill couple of months ago which made me spend $1300 dollars @ Nissan McKinney service center. the Engine was stalling during the idle time eg. at traffic lights and since then it was struggling to start at anytime of the day when ever i stop the engine, initially i thought it was the battery problem but i was aware how a car behaves when its having low battery so i have assumed that it was not the case and later confirmed when i saw the check engine light came up. As soon as the check engine light came up i took it to the nissan service center and they kept it for 3 days over the weekend. They said the crank/cam shaft was malfunctioning and had to replace it and they mentioned how much it costs for the repair since i cannot neglect the issue and kept the car running and make it more worse i agreed for the repair. I cant say the issue is completely resolved because since couple months i had 2 engine stalling and the engine still struggle to start even today. it takes 4 to 5 sec to start the engine. this was not the case when i bought the car it use to start in 1 ot 2 sec after ingnition. I Wish Nissan could take care of this issue.

MY CAR HAD BEEN YANKIN LIKE IF IT WERE TO TURN OFF AT COMPLETE STOPS, I CALLED THE DEALER COULTER NISSAN TO ASK AND THEY SAID TO TAKE IT IN, UNFORTUNATELY WHEN I GOT IN THE CAR TO TAKE IT, MY CAR WOULDN'T START AND I WAS ASKED TO HAVE IT TOWED THERE. IT MIGHT BE THE CAMSHAFT SENSOR AND THAT USUALLY WHEN THE CAMSHAFT SENSOR GOES BAD SO DOES THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR. MY VEHICLE HAS TWO CAMSHAFT SENSORS, I WORK AT AUTOZONE SO I BOUGHT THE PARTS AND REPLACED THEM NOW MY CAR WOULD CRANK BUT IT WOULD CHOKE, THERE WAS NO SPARK AT THE SPARK PLUGS, SO I HAD SEVERAL MECHANICS TAKE A LOOK AND NONE COULD FIND WHAT WAS WRONG UNTIL ONE OF THEM SAID I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE COMPUTER SO I DID AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE FOR A WHILE (MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED OFF). NOW MY ENGINE HAS BEEN MAKING A KNOCKING NOISE THAT GOES AWAY AFTER DRIVING IT FOR A WHILE, CAR VIBRATES AND I'VE NOTICED IT SHIFTING HARD IN THE FREEWAY, I DON'T HAVE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON...

I hate my Nissan and I hate the dealership even more. I feel that I get ripped off when I bring it to them. According to recall website this crank sensor was part of recall in 2006. I think it was replaced then, but I have had 2 costly repairs since August 2009. When I brought it in to dealership in August my check engine light was on, they replaced a sensor, for all I know it was the same sensor and they never replaced it during recall or in August, and only had to replace it when my car stopped working. When I brought it home in back in August it was cool out - no need to AC then the next time I went to use it, it doesn't work. Whenever I bring my car to Nissan 112 in NY I leave with more problems. This time they told me I have a bad motor mount and a bad drive belt. I will bring to my mechanic that I use for regular maintenance to check it out. I hope we can all sue Nissan for these crank sensor repairs as it seems to be a universal issue with Altimas this past decade.

Altima S 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 60,000 miles

My wife and I paid a top price for our used 2004 Altima with 35K. We justified the price because we thought we were buying a reliable product from a company that built quality cars. After about 2 ½ years of ownership my wife had the car TURN OFF while driving; with our 6 month old and her mom in the car. Turns out it was the Crank sensor gong bad at 55K. Then at 60K the check engine came on again, this time it was the bank 1 air/fuel ratio sensor. Luckily these are easy fixes, but it makes me question the integrity of the manufacture when they use parts that are prone to failure. Not sure if I would recommend purchasing Nissan products to others.

Had regular maintenance done on the car, then had it where you would turn the car off and it wouldn't start again until the engine cooled. Ended up being the camshaft sensor and we also had to get the crank shaft sensor replaced shortly after that because the car was going thru gas like no tomorrow.
