Took car in for oil change at an independent shop. Technician noticed that floor pans were rusted on both driver and passenger sides. In the 7-8 years car was being serviced at dealership there was never any mention of rust. Researched on internet and found this is a common problem with Nissan Altima model years 2002-2005. Called Nissan Consumer Affairs 4-13-15 to report the issue and request they repair it since I remembered shortly after purchasing the vehicle, I had received a notice regarding possible corrosion of the rear sub-frame [not same part but still undercarriage related and perhaps manufactured by the same company]. was advised by 1st representative to take the car to the dealership to have it evaluated. Dealership confirmed the rust and took pictures [I asked for a copies of the pictures but never got them]. called Consumer Affairs back [same day] and case was assigned to a representative. Rep called 4-14-15 and told me to get an estimate [the dealership did not perform this type of repair so they could not give an estimate]. took car to a body shop and got an estimate of approximately $2,000. Received decision from Nissan rep 5-5-15. They would not be repairing due to the age and mileage on the car as well as the environment. According to information I have seen on the internet, it seems to be more of a design flaw and from what I've read a potentially dangerous one at that. Can someone please take a look into Nissan's stance on this issue? it seems quite ridiculous to ask the owner to pay for a repair that the manufacturer probably knew was faulty in the first place [and if they didn't surely they know by now]. thank you in advance.

Forward is rusting underneath on the driver side and passenger side, have always had my car serviced when needed oil changes regularly washed regularly taken care of very well an all highway miles majority of the time. Keep having to repair the air conditioning system as well been spending lots of money lately I understand problems arise over time but the rust underneath the vehicle is a safety hazard considering I drive a lot of miles on the freeway. Found out this is a major problem happening with hundreds of Nissan Altima owners with these year models. I have been recommending the Nissan too many people I love this car and now I am afraid to get another one and I had planned on getting another one so if this issue isn't helped and taken care of I will look to purchase a different kind of car.

My 2005 Nissan Altima was being checked the whole underneath of the car was in real good shaped all except under the passenger floor board it is rusted through and a big hole is there it is going to have to be repaired it is like it was missed being undercoated in that spot. The hole is probably 12" X 18" that will have to be repaired.

Was informed during routine service (oil change and winter/summer tire swap) that there was extensive rust in front floor panel and that the vehicle would not pass next year's safety inspection unless rusted area was removed and replaced.

The contact owns a 2005 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that the undercarriage of the vehicle had excessive rust and a hole was developing underneath the driver side floorboard. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 135,000.

I took my car in for routine maintenance (oil change), an hour later I was notified from the mechanic with photos of the undercarriage of my 2005 Nissan Altima ser ((((shocked))). He said the floor pans were completely rusted out. Explaining this further, he said he could put a screwdriver through the rusted area into the carpet on the passenger side and that it was almost to that same point on the driver side. I contacted Nissan and was told my vehicle was over mileage and out of warranty. My mechanic said this car is unsafe to operate and gave me some options to fix my car......unreal and costly!!!! this issue is extremely scary to think that the floor pans could rust out at any time and cause senseless fatalities. I further investigated and after viewing online complaints was disturbed to SE this is a worldwide issue. This issue should be recalled and fixed by Nissan immediately.

The floor boards on my car are rusted through. I have had it estimated at multiple auto body shops and they knew before seeing the car that it was a Nissan. I did lots of online research and it is a common problem and defect with the Nissan. I also saw that after filing this complaint with NHTSA, that some customers had this problem repaired by Nissan at no cost. This is a widespread safety issue and Nissan should take responsibility for this problem. This car is garaged and regularly washed.

I have a 2005 Nissan Altima that I bought in 2008 and has had nothing but problems, first had to replace the steering knuckle because the steering was going out ($400) than had to replace the motor mounts, struts, inner/outer tie rods, I have no heat when at idle, while putting new tires on again, I also learned my floor boards are almost rusted through, and now I can not even drive my car because about 3 weeks ago it started sucking down oil ( 4 qts within a 3-6 hour time frame) and it's smoking bad out the tail pipe because of the head gasket/piston rings caused by a faulty pre-cat, and told I need to replace the engine. I see there is a recall for the 2.5L engine for this issue but on a 2006 model, what about my 2005 model with same engine?? searching the internet I find hundreds if not thousands of people having this same issues in 2002-2006 Altima's, obviously there is a problem with these engines and Nissan should be held accountable!!

I own a 2005 Nissan Altima. I currently had an oil change at a local garage and was informed that my floor boards are rusted with holes starting to form. My car only has 85,000 miles and is kept in the garage and washed often. This is the only spot on my car that I have any rust. I contacted Nissan about this issue and was informed that this is a common issue with the Altima. I had just had a sticker put on by Nissan and also a 72 point inspection and was never informed by them that there was holes underneath my car! Nissan said they would go half on the cost of repairing both front floorboards which would cost me $400 which I do not have. My main concern for this issue is come winter time, I will have holes through my floorboards and with two small children in my car, I am extremely conserned about having toxic fumes enter into my car which could lead to passing out or the fact that my foot could go right through the floor. This is a major safety issue and Nissan should be backing up their products as this is a common issue with the manufacturing of their metal.

I took my car in to get an oil change. While my car was on the lift we noticed a huge rust spot under the passenger side. They were able to easily put a screwdriver inside the hole and it lifted my carpet. And what I don't understand is that one month earlier my car was in the shop putting on new tierods and bushings, and there was no rust at all. So in one month the undercoating was gone and a huge rust hole appeared. I took my car to the dealer and they said my warranty was over and it would be about $900 to fix. This is crazy. I've never had any major problems with this car and it only has 62,000 on it. Nissan needs to make this a recall because this is happening to alot of the Altima. This is a major safety problem. And if this is not resolved I will no longer be buying from Nissan.

I have recently discovered the driver and passenger side floor boards are severely rusted through to the bottom of the carpet! this is a serious safety hazard with potential for injury from stepping through and possible death from exhaust fumes causing unconsciousness while driving. There is absolutely no rust anywhere else on the car?! to my knowledge there are numerous consumer complaints about this very problem with no record of a recall on file to correct the structural problem of the vehicle.
