The car has run out of gas several times, even though the fuel gauge says there is plenty of gas. It reports 1/4 tank or sometimes better than that when it runs out of gas.

I purchased the car in 2013 and it has had consistent problems with an inaccurate gas gauge in the instrument cluster. It seems to only read incorrectly when fuel is below 1/4 tank. At that point you have no idea how much is left because it will fluctuate from 1/3 to empty regularly. I have ran out of gas twice now despite keeping track with the odometer and knowing how many mpg's I usually get. It is pretty awesome how large the gas tank is, that is a definite plus for the car. But it would be nice to have an accurate and easy visual representation of how much fuel is left since driving conditions change and I have seen my mpg's shift by as much as 5 mpg's depending on conditions.
I haven't fixed it yet, but this spring/summer I plan on removing the fuel pump assembly and verifying that it is operating appropriately. There is also the potential that the instrument cluster is broken. I have found one youtube video mentioning that these Altima's can have faulty gas gauge on the instrument cluster.

Fuel gauge in instrumental panel does not accurately measure properly. Instrument panel said I had over a quarter tank left of gas and car gave out on the highway. Thankfully I was able to exit safely but had I been in the far left lane or somewhere busier..it could have been extremely dangerous. I put gas in the car and it started back up but the fuel gauge when it gets under a half tank of gas is basically unpredictable of knowing how much gas is actually in there.
