Altima SE 3.5L V6

  • CVT transmission
  • 151,551 miles

First CVT failed at 117,240 and replaced by standard warranty by Nissan. The replacement CVT currently stalls at low speeds, 5-10 mph, while taking off. On 03/02/2017, 151,551 miles, less than 35,000 miles since the first CVT was replaced, the dealership, McGavock Nissan, Lubbock, TX, diagnosed the problem. Their solution is to replace the replacement CVT. I called Nissan USA. Nissan USA called back and advised they would not replace the CVT because the replacement CVT warranty was expired, 12 months and/or 12,000 miles. Nissan USA was of no help. This problem is not only annoying, it poses a danger to my family! The vehicle is still running, however, it is hard to cross a busy street because it stalls on takeoff. Dangerous! I am very disappointed in this Nissan Altima. The CVT is a failure top to bottom. Nissan needs to do the right thing! Don't install this type transmission in their vehicles!

Altima ES 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 190,000 miles

new tires, new brakes, then transmission shudders and shakes. Oxygen sensors and catalytic converter, quote of $ 1500.00 to repair. Nissan Altima is not a reliable affordable car to own. Beware of Repairs costing more than car is worth to own!

Altima LX

  • Automatic transmission
  • 102,385 miles

On November 3, 2016, my son and I took our 2008 Nissan Altima LX in to Nalley Nissan of Atlanta to have it checked out for transmission shuddering, non acceleration, and lack of ability to back up on an incline. They took a fluid sample and sent it off to the lab but noted that the sample they took was tinted red 'where it should have been green', and charged me $130 for the diagnostic. For the NEXT 4 WEEKS I communicated with Nalley Nissan's service department daily to get a response from the lab, but was told nothing, calls unreturned, fingers pointed at whomever might have done an oil change recently and added the wrong transmission fluid - visited Nalley in person 3-4 times over the course of November and finally got in touch with Nissan Consumer Affairs to see if they could intervene and get me an answer. In the meantime, I had to rent a car for my son, take time off from work, etc. - costly and very inconvenient.

Today, November 29, Consumer Affairs finally got to me saying the lab had confirmed that they felt someone had added non-Nissan authorized fluid into the transmission and it was causing oil corrosion and negatively affecting the metal parts in the transmission. Potential replacement $6-7k and not covered under any extended warranty.

To me this means that any oil change in the past year or two might have caused the problem as there is nothing on the transmission that says "Use only Nissan transmission fluid'. That's like only being able to use Nissan-approved oil or parts every time you get an oil change or replace a part. When a mechanic tops up fluids does one need to remind them to only use Nissan-authorized materials?

Now here's the kicker: 3 months ago, my daughter's 2009 Altima experienced the same problems and we took it in to the Nissan of Athens (GA). They test drove it, experienced the same problems my son's car would later have, and replaced the transmission free of charge through an extended warranty from Nissan.

Can anyone suggest what we should do next regarding the 2008 Nissan? Thanks

Altima S Coupe 2.5L

  • CVT transmission
  • 106,000 miles

I own a 2008 Nissan Altima 2.5S Coupe with an automatic CV Transmissions. Other than highway driving performance, manual operation, or just putting my foot into the gas pedal, it is very annoying to drive! It feels like it is always shifting, advancing into a higher gear before it should, causing the car to vibrate and shutter. It sucks!

I took it to the Nissan Dealership to have it checked out (still under factory warranty and extended warranty I purchased with the car in Sept 2014). (Transmission carries a factory warranty until 120,000 miles). The Dealership told me there was nothing wrong with the transmission and that I need to get used to the CV Transmission. They also serviced the transmission (flushed and changed fluid), said at 106,000 mile and not knowing if the previous owner had done it, then it should be done. OK, so the dealership serviced the transmission and I will tell you this, it didn't change the performance of the transmission whatsoever.

If this is how Nissan transmissions typically perform I will tell you this, it will be the last Nissan I buy for sure! As far as I'm concerned this CV transmission really sucks and is an annoyance to drive around town. I may call Nissan customer service or just take the car back to a different Nissan Dealership service dept. and have it checked out once again. What a pain in the ass problem to have especially knowing that Nissan probably won't do anything about it!
