I picked up a Nissan Altima because I thought that they were dependable. I chose it for its reputation and then I find out that an engine is prematurely failing after only 133,000 miles. I admit that's high but in my line of work that still shouldn't be an issue. I live in Oceanside, Ca and the distance to San Diego or Riverside, or Los Angeles will burn miles off your vehicle faster than anywhere else.
I began noticing my oil consumption issue after getting oil changed at a Lube and Tune in National City. After this I marked my calendar for a monthly oil change and within 3 weeks I had no oil level on the dipstick. I then took it to a Midas Lube place and they did the change out of the remaining oil and filled once again. Within a week I got a low oil pressure indicator which came on again, just as it had done in the previously times before taking it into these places and I had no oil on the dipstick again. I have no sign of smoke or anything like that. I continued to add 5 quarts of oil every 1000 miles now to an engine that should not need it but does.
I finally got tired of dealing with it and then took it to a Nissan Dealer in Oceanisde yesterday and after examining my car for 8 hours, costing me $180.00 loss in work day, I have been told my piston rings are worn and the engine has to be replaced at a cost of $8350.00. WTF???? This is what happens to a consumer and because I drive the hell out of my car my warranty or the "little" extended platinum warranty does not cover it either.
So here is my deal. I have to pay $25,000.00 more on this vehicle which most likely is going to go down hard here soon because who the hell can afford a $8350.00 engine replacement these days. The likely scenario is I stop paying on the car, it gets repoed, Nissan has to repair it at a cost of $8350.00 and the find out that the car is a loss because of the depreciation in value of the vehicle. Hello NISSAN make it right and fixed the defects in this engine, which by the way are listed multiple times for this issue over the past 15 years. I will never, ever, recommend this car to anyone for a long range vehicle. As for Nissan restore my faith please.
