Fuel gauge failure on 2006 Nissan Frontier 4door pickup truck. I called several Nissan dealerships and all of them told me it was the fuel sending unit without ever seeing the truck! after doing some online research it seems this is a common problem on this vehicle, I feel this is a safety hazard as someone could run out of fuel on a busy road and be hit from behind and or wreck trying to maneuver the vehicle from the roadway. (as almost happened to me).

This is a complaint about the same problem I'm having with my 2006 Nissan Frontier. I called Nissan and mentioned the recall notice for this and they would not guarantee that it would be covered. At this point the only way I can be sure that my vehicle has gas in it is to track the miles every time I fill up the fuel tank. The fuel gauge is useless and if I fill it up it immediately says it is empty, the yellow light comes on and my check engine light comes on. Even the Nissan recall notice says this is a safety issue but when I called them they said I "might" not be covered..... 2006 Nissan Frontier with fuel gauge not working correctly at approx 80,000 miles on vehicle. Initially service engine soon light came on intermittently when the fuel reached approx 1/4 tank full. Now, ses light stays illuminated and actual gas gauge intermittently works. This is well documented problem addressed many many times on vehicle forums. This is a serious safety issue as I have no idea of how much gas is in my vehicle and the potential exists for an accident on a major road due to a real gas outage. There has been a safety bulletin about this but no recall yet to my understanding and has occurred throughout many different Nissan truck models from the xterra, pathfinder, and Frontier.

Frontier

  • 60,000 miles
My Frontier is experiencing a fuel gauge and/or a fuel sending unit failure. The gauge will read empty when there is fuel and in turn will indicate there is fuel when it is running out. I have run out of fuel on at least 3 occasions one of which was quite dangerous at highway speeds. I contacted Nissan and they offered to pay half of the costs (which they say were unknown) to repair this. I believe this failure falls under NHTSA campaign id number 10V075000 and is a safety recall. Thus Nissan should be held fully accountable to repair the vehicle of a known safety problem. The above failure date and mileage are approximate.

Frontier

  • 39,000 miles
On approximately 10/9/2010, my fuel gauge stopped working correctly (approx. 39K miles on the vehicle). With about 1/4 tank full, I filled the tank but the gauge did not register "full". after a day or two, the gauge registered correctly. It has been working intermittently since this time and now there is a "service engine soon" light appearing. This problem is widely reported by Nissan truck owners.

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Frontier. The contact stated that he refueled the vehicle and proceeded to drive 70 mph when the fuel level gauge displayed that the fuel level was empty and the low fuel level warning indicator was illuminated. In addition, the service engine soon light was illuminated. The contact stated that the fuel level gauge would only display accurate fuel levels when the fuel tank was approximately three-quarters full and would fail when the fuel tank was down to three eights of a tank. The failure began two months prior and the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic where the contact was informed that the fuel level sensor would need replacing. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 71,000. Updated 01/20/11

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Frontier. While driving approximately 45 mph, the fuel gauge dropped to empty and the fuel and service lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact had to set the trip odometer to monitor fuel usage to avoid running out of fuel. The vehicle would not pass the emissions test because of the defective fuel gauge. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000 and the current mileage was approximately 90,000.

2006 Nissan Frontier fuel system. After fueling up my pickup, the check engine light comes on and gas gauge show empty and dte computer goes out. Being a component of the fuel system this can be dangerous. Any malfunction in a gas tank should warrant investigation and resolution.

Nissan 2006 Frontier gas gauge sticks at 1/4 full, and results in a sudden slowing when vehicle unexpectedly runs out of fuel. Nissan says only some 2006 Nissan Frontiers are covered under the current recall (10V-075) and that the recall does not apply to this vehicle. Nissan refuses to fix safety defect. This recall should be expanded to include this vehicle.

Frontier

Fuel level sensor failure showing code P0463. This is very similar in nature to campaign id: 10V075000. Vehicle is 2006 Nissan Frontier SE crew cab. Happens frequently. (2 times in the last 700 miles for me). Check engine light comes on and fuel level drops to empty. Periodically comes up part way but totally unreliable. Requires estimating fuel level by odometer reading. Could cause vehicle to run out of gas and stall in traffic, increasing the risk of crash with loss of power steering and brakes when engine stalls.

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Frontier. The fuel gauge displayed empty when the gasoline tank was full or empty. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who stated that the failure was caused by the fuel sending unit. The manufacturer advised her that the VIN wasn't in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated the she doesn't have a telephone number were she could be reached. The failure mileage was 56,000 and the current mileage was 83,000.

Frontier

  • 60,000 miles
I own a 2006 Nissan Frontier pickup. The fuel sending unit is defective and I have no way of knowing how much gas I have. This is not an inconvenience. It is a safety issue. I could run out of gas in traffic, causing an accident or I may have to replace it myself since I cannot afford to have the dealer do it. The repair is hazardous as it deals with removal of the fuel tank. 1/2 of the VIN numbers for this year Frontier have been recalled for repair of this defect and 1/2 have not. Those not recalled are experiencing the problem and Nissan is refusing to fix the problem.

The fuel gauge shows the vehicle has approximately 1/4 tank of fuel. It seems to stay there for some time, then after some mileage drops completely below empty, the fuel warning comes on solid (not gradual before this failure). All indications upon filling up is that the tank is close to empty. All indications appear to be identical with a similar recall for the same recall for the Nissan Frontier xe models both before and afterward in the 2006 model year. Mine manufactured 08/06. That recall is NHTSA campaign id number: 10V075000.

2006 Nissan Frontier le 4X4 - fuel sending issue. This will be the fourth replacement in 18 months. 2/28/09 ' approx. 38,000 miles,1/4 full, turned vehicle off to refuel, drove away approx 5 mile down the road fuel gage went to empty, fuel light came on, mileage driven screen below odometer blinks, and check engine light comes on. Paid $380 to fix fuel sending issues. Vehicle work fine - Nissan recall comes out return to dealer and replaces for free., 6/15/10 ' replaced at approx 63,000 miles, 3/4 full, start vehicle, fuel sender registers empty w/light on and mileage driven screen blinking, Nissan replaces. 7/28/10 ' replaced at approx 65,000 mile, 1/4 full, fill vehicle, start vehicle, vehicle is slow to register full, takes about 10 miles to level out. Fill vehicle a second time same issue slow to register full. Full, start vehicle, vehicle registers empty, empty light on and mileage driven screen blinking. 8/09/10 ' approx 65,500 miles, vehicle full, turn vehicle on, same issues as above. Called Nissan again they say bring it in and they'll look again.

2006 Nissan Frontier's fuel gauge is sporadic. It will read 1/4 tank and then suddenly drop to empty and the low fuel light comes on. After filling, it may take days for the gauge to read full. Shortly after the problem started the service engine soon light came on. Computer error says error PO463 fuel level sensor circuit high input probable cause: This is a safety issue. From NHTSA campaign #10V075000: "this could cause the vehicle to run out of gas and stall in traffic increasing the risk of a crash". Nissan dealer service tech. Told me this a big issue with many more vehicles than the recall (NHTSA camp. #10V075000) covers. A defective gauge and their vehicle not covered by the current recall(s). I don't know the statistics on what it takes to trigger an expanded recall but I hope NHTSA looks into it. I've checked with other online forums for Nissan & there are many other people having the same problem. Nc requires that we get our vehicles inspected every year. My truck will not pass with the service engine light on...please help!

They said no and declined to assist with even the part for the 500 part. From looking at numerous forums and this site. I can see that the are many owners in the same situation--a defective gauge and their vehicle not covered by the current recall(s). I don't know the statistics on what it takes to trigger an expanded recall but I hope NHTSA looks into it.

Summary: Nissan is recalling certain model year 2006 and model year 2008 Frontier, xterra and pathfinder vehicles. The molded fuel tank shells can deform, causing the fuel sender float arm to contact an embossment molded into the tank shell causing the instrument panel fuel gauge to show that the vehicle has approximately one quarter tank when the fuel tank is empty. My VIN si [xxx] Nissan claims my vehicle is not part of the recall when it is obvious that im having this issue and have had it for some time now. Nissan is refusing to honor it's customers. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
