no accelration in drive for about 5 seconds while driving

The issue with the transmission not engaging while accelerating usually occurs while crossing dangerous intersection while turning, or making a turn at a stop light. It is scary as hell and could lead to a serious accident. I have yet found anyone who can tell me what the problem is in order to get it fixed.
