problem #2

Dec 062014

Frontier Crome

  • Automatic transmission
  • 2,000 miles

driving around town I let up on the gas , car ahead tail light flashes, press on gas pedal and no response just rolls along at coast speed.

gas pedal almost to the floor and transmission jumps in and whee away I go. I cannot get it to do this it just does it when least expected, Had it happen when a friend was with me and he made the statement, there is some thing is wrong with the transmission on this truck. Any suggestions would be great. At 89 years young I need some help. Went for a ride a couple times with Nissan people but could not get it to do anything wrong. Help

problem #1

Mar 302014

Frontier LX 4 cyl

  • Manual transmission
  • 2,330 miles

I was told this vehicle was just like the one I was replacing due to high milage which had 200,000 miles on it, mostly used to tow or move boats to regattas across the country. The previus two frontiers I had owned went over 130,000 miles before replacing the clutch.

My new truck started burning the clutch with the first boat I moved into my shop and I went to the dealer and they just shugged it off. later I started moving more boats around my site and the same thing happened. I went back to the dealer and this time the mechanic offered to come to my site and see how I was handling the truck when backing the boats around. The mechanic agreed it was not a problem with the weight of the boats, the terain or how I handled the truck. He said the problem had actually started when Nissan changed to the "twin mass" flywheel in 2005. At that time I said all I want is for the problem to be corrected so it would give me the reliability of my 2002 truck. I just received word that the replacement will be covered under the warrenty this time but not if it happens again. I wonder how many other owners have had the same clutch problem?

Update from Apr 13, 2014: The transmisson was repaired under warrenty , but I can't trust it and so have up graded to a Frontier with a V6, with an automatic transmission. I was granted a $1000 by Nissan but my out of pocket enpense was much more. The drive system is not really made for handling to stress that is put on it for manuvering a trailer or carring loads that are less then the mfg stated rating. I suggested that Nissan consider going back to the 2003 drive system which was excellent, as a replacement for mine and they responded that they wouldn't that and if I had it done it would void the rest of my warrenty. Since the problem was not caused by me but in my opinion, a design issue, I had hoped for nearly a cross the board trade except for the additional cost of the new truck. In the end, with the best deal I could get between six dealers, I am out of pocket nearly $8000.

Interesting enough, I found several different dealers were not aware of the problem, they tried to sell me a vehicle I didn't want or didn't know all that was available with different models of the same vehicle. Just be aware.
