The vehicle is an automatic and jerks into gear. The problem gets worse the warmer or longer it is driven at one time. Prior to this happening, the vehicle would stall out if in stop and go traffic and then after that it completely went into limp mode staying in 5th gear.

renowned Transmission is stuck in 5th gear when going forward. It jerks hard when putting in reverse or trying to downshift. The check engine light is on but the engine is running fine, although it spins excessively when starting before firing. When it first occurred, restarting the motor would fix the problem. Now that isn't even working. When I started my online search for a fix, I found that 2004 Nissan Maxima is known for this problem as well as a variety of other transmission issues. Seems that Nissan should have taken this problem seriously enough to do something about it long ago.

Nissan is well aware of the faulty transmission. They should replace them as they do not perform right. Sticks in 5th gear, when RPMs are high it will slam into gear, a bone jarring slam. It performs well when cold - once its warm that's when it breaks loose. The sensor in the tranny gets confused and that's when it acts out. We love our Christine. Just wish she had a better transmission.
