About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
The door actuator, for the right rear door, does not function properly. When I push the electric "doors unlock- lock button" on the driver door panel, the door does not lock or unlock, as it should.

The door lock on the driver side went out and shortly after the rest of the door locks in the vehicle began to fail. Because of this issue, I am currently at risk of theft if the door lock do not completely lock. I received an estimate of $1600 to fix the issue and I have heard that's by others are having the same problem.

The power locks randomly don't work using the fob or inside auto lock button. They can be used manually, but are not always functional using the "power" function.

Just over two years ago the automatic driver's side door lock became unreliable. There are times when the door must be manually locked or unlocked. The situation seems to be exacerbated by heat and direct sunlight on the driver's side door. My concern is that not knowing if the door is locked or unlocked creates a safety hazard both while driving and in the event of a need for quick exit from the vehicle. Simply looking at the manual locking switch can be deceptive because it will move into the locked position without fully engaging the lock. For safety reasons I prefer to drive with the doors locked. Having a secure environment is paramount in certain neighborhoods. If anyone can simply open the door to gain access, there is a significant increased risk of carjacking, injury, theft, etc. Having the doors lock correctly is a basic safety precaution. Additionally, in emergencies it's important to be able to unlock doors quickly. In this automated age we tend to rely on the automated systems of our vehicles and it's unfamiliar to resort to the manual locking system, which as I explained above can be deceptive. I can easily understand how some people would be confused how unlock a door using the manual level in an emergency. In emergencies every second counts. The locking/unlocking solenoid malfunctioning is clearly a high risk in emergency scenarios. The dealer charges an average of $1600 to have all the solenoids replaced which amounts to making the owner pay for a known safety issue. At this price many will forgo getting the problem fixed, putting their family members at risk with the above mishap examples. Nissan should recall the affected vehicles and repair this safety issue.

The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Murano. The contact stated that all four power door locks would lock and unlock independently. The dealer was called who advised that there were no recalls for the replacement of the locks. The manufacturer was contacted and advised that they would offer a $250 discount from the $700 cost of repairs. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 80,200.

Front door locks working intermittently when using the remote..

I have a 2003 Nissan Murano with around 60,000 miles on it. The driver's door lock actuator has stopped working and from my research, it seems to be a very common problem with Muranos. I believe that this is a safety issue and should be a recall since the problem is so wide spread but my dealer is unwilling to take it up with Nissan. Can you help?

1.) my driver and passenger door lock actuators are not working as of yesterday 4/13/11. I have to use my key to unlock my door- the fab will not work. From the outside and my unlock/lock button does not work on the inside either. The fab does unlock the rears doors only. 2.) failure occurs every time 3.) have not fixed it yet because based on research, this is a Nissan issue that needs to be addressed. I signed a recent petition with over 624 other signatures of people with similar problems. Nissan needs to fix this now as it is a huge safety issue and could result in harm to vehicle owners if they cannot lock their doors instantly.

2003 Nissan Murano has faulty door locks. Drivers door locks w/out notice locks me out. Passenger door will not lock or unlock w/ key fob and since there is no key on the passenger outside it is extremely inconvenient to go around to the drivers side to PE the passenger door. New door actuators are $1500.

I have a 2003 Nissan Murano and I'm having problems with the electric door locks. They work intermittently and I've heard from my other people that have the same problem. I'm concerned that in the event of a crash or fire, my wife may not be able to open the doors in a timely manner to escape the car. This is a serious problem and should be recalled by Nissan before a serious problem occurs that could result in loss of life. Again...this is a common problem among Murano owners. Thank you

II have a 2003 Nissan Murano and the doors lock and Nissan says it does not know of any defects, to repair this I have read over 300 complaints about this, can you do anything to have a recall and have this taken care of, I was stranded on the N.J.turn pike with my 4 grand children for 6hrs to get help ?

Tailgate, passenger and back door locks sticking. Occurs about 80% of the time when trying to unlock the doors. This problems stops me from getting in and out of the car. Very concerned that this is effecting my safety in the vehicle. Door clicks like it is unlocking but it just sticks. Nothing has been done to fix this - repairs are very costly.

I bought my 2003 Murano in January of 2008. Every time I had an oil change done I was told that I had a very low amount. The low amount was never looked at as a problem. When I was getting a recall completed I was telling the service department employee about my low oil level when I took my car every 3,000 miles. He asked if I had any oil leaks that were left on the ground when I moved my car. I let him know that I have never seen oil on the ground. I also let him know that I hear a rattling noise sometimes when accelerating from a stopped position and sometimes my car gets stuck when I try to accelerate and then after a few seconds it will zoom forward. I have almost rear ended around 6 cars. I try to let cars get a little ways in front of me if it gets stuck so I do not rear end the car in front of me. I should not have to do this. He said that the recall of the alternator would fix the issues with the car getting stuck and they would check the engine. I still have this problem today with the car getting stuck. I had an oil consumption test done every 1,000 miles and by time I made it to the 2,000 miles my oil level was low. So they never did a third oil consumption test like they said they would. Then I was told that they would need to replace the entire engine. I have seen many complaints about the same issue. I feel that the engines that were placed in the 2003 Nissan Muranos were defective and should be recalled because this could cause an accident and I have a 14 month old son in my car with me 90% of the time. Therefore not only is my life and others in cars around me in jeopardy so is my son's life. This defect should be looked into immediately because I am sure there are many other people have this same issue. There is one other issue I had where I had unlocked my doors and put my child in the car. When I went to get in the car had locked on it's own. Luckily we were at the house and had a spare key. I have learned that this issue common.

I have a 2003 Nissan Murano and recently started having problems with the door locks. The failure occurs every single time. The driver door won't lock unless I lock it manually and won't unlock unless done manually. The passenger door and rear left door are more sporadic. Sometimes they lock sometimes they don't sometimes they lock halfway and then won't open and there is no keylock to open the rear and passenger side doors so I have to open the drivers door to then try and open the other doors. I was told by Nissan that new door actuators are required. I was lucky and my extended warranty paid for my driver's door repair but refused the other two doors.

Fuel door on my 2003 Murano locked up and could not be opened with directions in owners manual. Took to dealer and dealer determined problem was likely in the computer module behind the dash. It was going to be $250 in labor, the diagnostic charge of $90, and possibly a $300 parts charge to fix. I told the dealership to disable the locking mechanism, at a cost of $135.

2003 Nissan Murano SE 4WD has several issues. Firstly the right side sun visor clip is defective and will not hold visor in place: 3 trips to dealer have not resolved this issue as they never have the part. Secondly the cvt transmission presents a problem on holding the vehicle in place on a uphill incline...if you don't brake, the vehicle just rolls back, as opposed to standard auto transmission which locks, and prevents significant rollback.
