Murano

  • 120,000 miles
While driving my vehicle, the brakes became spongy and required pushing the pedal all the way to the floor to stop. I was able to drive the car to a local auto shop and they replaced the master brake cylinder and brake booster, but the car is still having problems. Now they say it is the ABS system.

Once the ABS has engaged (slipping on snow), the brake pedal will go to the floor and loses all pressure. So rather than just momentarily releasing the brake pressure and pulsating it on/off, it remains in the off position. This is the 5th instance of this problem occurring for me. Normally the brakes go back to normal after a day or 2, but it has now been one week. A quick google search will see that there are hundreds of other 2009 Muranos that have the same problem. Once the ABS fires, the brakes loose all pressure. It is only a matter of time until someone is killed. Nissan is quoting a $2,000 repair bill to replace the ABS acutator, which is too expensive for many people to fix. Please look into this asap. Do a google search for '2009 Nissan Murano loses brake pressure, or ABS problems"

Brake failure due to loss of brake pressure. As I'm driving over an uneven rough surface, I tried braking and loss brake pressure as I hit a bump. It's happened multiple times in the past as far back as 12/2014. The vehicle was taken to 2 different area Nissan dealers. Pretty costly diagnostic yielded no permanent solution, because it's back again. I called Nissan consumer line and they suggested going back to another dealership. Please can someone value the tax payers lives and do something before lives are lost. Please

I was driving on a highway at about 55 mph and a deer ran in front of my car. I hit the brakes hard but couldn't stop in time (the deer died) and when I did finally did achieve a stop I noticed my brakes went all the way to the floor. They were very spongy and took a huge distance to stop the car the rest of the drive home, even at speeds under 35 mph. I thought maybe the collision caused damage to my brakes somehow. A mechanic bled my brakes and restored functionality, and carefully inspected everything but could not find any damage. A few weeks later it snowed and when my car slid on some ice while braking into a turn, the brake pedal went to the floor again. I had the brakes bled again and the vehicle thoroughly inspected but again they found nothing. They recommended replacing the master cylinder. Before I could get that work done, another snow caused slippery roads which again caused my brakes to go spongy when braking on a patch of ice. My mechanic recommended I contact Nissan and during my research I found hundreds of complaints for 2009 Nissan Muranos with similar conditions and recommendations to replace the ABS hcu (average cost, $2500). Two different Nissan dealers and their corporate reps say they know nothing of the pending NHTSA investigation on this problem.

I have had 3 brake issues in less than 2 weeks. My vehicle has 74,000 miles on it and is maintained per manufacturer recommendations. Brake pads and rotors are a year old and passed inspection. The first occurrence I was driving 35 mph and hit a manhole cover. The brakes went spongy and went to the floor. I pumped the brakes a few times and they returned. The second occurrence I was driving around 40 mph and coming around a curve and the same thing happened. The third time it was snowy and very slick. Upon braking on a turn, the ABS engaged and I lost all brakes again. These experiences were very scary as I had not control over my vehicle. I use this to Transport my grandchildren and the fact that I can loose control over the ability to stop my vehicle intermittently is very alarming. The dealer replaced the master cylinder (with no documented failure). The second occurrence happened less than 5 days later and I brought it back to the dealer where they replaced the ABS hydraulic control unit, which cost $3000 for parts and labor! this needs to be recalled as it is dangerous. I have lost faith in Nissan as they have not addressed this issue!

Brakes go to the floor before engaging. Driving on normal paved road when a vehicle pulled out in front of us, ABS engaged and now we have no brakes until touching the floor. Went to Nissan for service and they say it is the ABS that needs replacing, $2800. We just had new brakes on the back less than 2 months ago. They say due to numerous complaints on Nissan forums that they believe it is an issue with the ABS malfunctioning and not simply replacing the master cylinder as many people have replaced this part first only to need the ABS replaced. We tried pumping and hoping for a reset but nothing has helped. Nissan needs to do a recall before a life is lost due to this known issue. We are the one owner of this vehicle, 2009 with less than 65,000 miles on the car. No issues leading up to this nor any indicator lights going off.. I know our safety is priceless but if us folks are doing the right thing and getting these repairs done, then a recall goes into affect, I would like to see some sort of reimbursement.....

Aplied the brakes and they went down all the way and the car did not stop. I went through the stop sign into the highway with my two daughters 6 years and tens years old. I was scared. Avoided collision from several cars on the high way by steering the car of the road to the grass. My brake pads were serviced two months ago becouse the samething happened. The car did not stop when I was pulling off my driveway.

Our brakes became spongy and did not work when driving.at a speed of 35 mph. Eventually the brake pedal went to the floor. The car was towed to a dealer who replaced the ABS actuator at a cost of $2176 for part, $528 for labor and $69 for diagnosis. We feel Nissan should have recalled this very dangerous actuator. We were on a residential street so our speed was 35 mph when the brakes went out abruptly. We are appalled that the company is charging exorbitant part prices and allowing high labor fees to replace this defective and life threatening ABS actuator. The dealer told us they were not responsible for reducing the costs. It is totally up to Nissan to adjust these costs. Many people could lose their lives because this dangerous situation is not communicated to owners of 2009 Nissan Muranos.

2009 Nissan Murano le. Driving through a residential area, traveling at roughly 25 mph. Road was dry, sky was clear, vehicle was warm and had been driven earlier in day with no issue. Vehicle has been dealer maintained and only has 74000 miles on it and had just been dealer inspected 2 weeks prior. Approaching a stop sign, began normal braking. There was a small pot hole or really just a rough spot in the road I drove through while braking, and lost all brake pressure, pedal went to the floor but was not engaging the brakes or stopping the vehicle. I began pumping the brakes and was thankfully able to stop, but not before I was well past the stop sign and into the intersection. Thankfully no other cars were there. Driving straight home from there the pedal was still very soft, or spongy and the brakes were not working properly. They required pumping or varied pressure to engage, and then would not provide pedal pressure or feed back. If pushed slow to normally, you could push the pedal to the floor still while trying to stop. Husband inspected all brake fluids and vacuum lines and found no leaks, or loss of fluid. With the vehicle off pumping brakes not building pressure. A simple search for "2009 Murano spongy brakes" returned many people through many forums with the exact same issue, that seems to be based on braking on a bumpy road and the ABS system. From what I understand a ABS solenoid is stuck from the ABS engaging on a bumpy road, or uneven surface. This issue is extremely unsafe and I would not doubt has caused many accidents. There is also no warning signs as the vehicle was inspected by the dealership 2 weeks prior. Very scary, and had a vehicle been in the intersection, there would have been no way to avoid a accident.

  • 61,000 miles
I experienced for the third time a brake malfunction Thursday night 2/2/17. I was carefully driving home on a snow covered road and I applied my brakes to make a turn and the brake pedal went almost to the floor. The first and second time this happened under a hard braking situation on wet roads. In the past this condition has been periodic but the condition has now existed continually for about 1 week. The brake pedal goes nearly to the floor before braking begins and there is no ABS. I brought the car to the dealer a few months ago and they performed a brake flush and refill. The very next day it happened again. Sometimes the brakes start acting normally after pumping the brake pedal multiple times. But the dangerous condition always returns seemingly at random under multiple road conditions and at various speeds. There have been 2 near miss collisions. The consumer stated the ABS actuator was replaced and the vehicle was repaired.

On two occasions over the past week my vehicle brake pedal became very soft / spongy and went to the floor while exiting highway offramp. I was exiting at about 40-45 mph, the offramp is curved & was bumpy with a couple of potholes. Brakes functioned normally until vehicle hit a bump, then pedal gradually went down further to floorboard. Braking still possible but took power significantly reduced and distance increased. I pumped the brakes a few times and all seemed to return to normal. On the first occasion I got out to check brake fluid level; still fillled to max leaving line in reservoir. I was able to slowly and cautiously drive home. All brake pads are new, changed in March 2017. Please look into this issue; extremely dangerous condition for driver and other motorists / pedestrians.

The brakes are failing to stop in a safe distance due to the brake pedal going to the floor. Problem is it comes and goes and usually starts to happen after a hard breaking action. There is currently an investigation already open into this problem but wanted to add it to the growing list.

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Murano. While driving unknown speeds, the brakes were applied and failed to respond. The brake pedal traveled to the floorboard and the contact had to pump the brake pedal and drive slowly to get the vehicle home. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer (North strand Nissan (2502 highway 9 E, little river, SC 29556) but the failure was unable to be duplicated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue and opened case number: 29027847. No further assistance was provided. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.

Brake pedal suddenly got soft and went to the floor as I exited the highway almost causing a rear end collision. Master cylinder was replaced but brakes remain the same with brake pedal going to the floor. After researching on line it appears that the ABS control module is to blame but no recall has been issued by Nissan !

When driving in rush hour traffic the vehicle in front of me rapidly slowed, causing me to need to brake rapidly as well. Upon applying my brakes, they engaged and then instantly released and the pedal went to the floor where the brakes finally reengaged, allowing me to slow. Had I not been several car lengths back, I would not have been able to stop. Once this occurred, each time I had to brake, the brakes would perform a little better, but remained spongy. Once I was able to come to a stop, I pumped the brakes a couple of times and they worked properly from that point on. Upon checking the vehicle, the brake fluid and brakes were all in good shape and there was no immediate explanation for the problem. Based on internet research, however, this appears to be the problem that is currently being investigated.

  • 62,528 miles
11/04/2017, I was driving my 2009 Nissan Murano, 62,528 miles. I came across a road strip getting ready for tarring. When I felt the shake, I applied the brake slowly and I felt the brake pedal soft. About 100 yards from me I have to stop at the red light. I tried pushing hard on the brake pedal, it went all the way to the floor and I ended up stopping in the middle of the intersection. All the braking and yelling from other drivers, luckily, nobody hits me. My wife and child in the car got panicked. Drove the vehicle to the curb and stopped with soft brake pedal. Switched off the vehicle for 5 minutes and stated and everything seems okay. Noticed that no indicator(especially brake indicator) was lighted up during this ordeal. Monday called the dealer and made an appointment. As per the dealer, this issue is reported by other 2009 Murano owners and it costs around $3000 to fix as there is no recall issued yet.

Murano

  • 95,000 miles
When applying brake during driving, brake pedal dropped to floor causing the car to not stop as normal, almost resulting in two separate accidents. Also, when starting the car, brake pedal dropped to floor. Does not happen consistently, but several times over the last month. Midas replaced the master cylinder, as they suggested, but the incident happened twice after. All times were on city streets. Instead of the normal light touch needed I've used since 2009, I had to stomp the brake completely to get it to stop and avoid accidents.
