Pathfinder Platinum 3.5L V6

  • CVT transmission
  • 47,757 miles

Bought vehicle brand new in 2017, problems with intermittent engine starting issues & hesitation on startup at around 77,000km. Oil changes done every 8,000km at dealer, per dealer recommendation. Took to dealer to diagnose several times, said no codes, said nothing wrong, suggested premium fuel, never suggested there was ever dark oil, or flakes in oil, or should tighten up oil change frequency.

Fast-forward to 25-Jul-2023 and 157,309km, timing chain rattle noise on start-up, and Check Engine Light (codes P0014 & P0017). Without much diagnosis, dealer said engine is sludged and the only solution is a new engine.

Took it to second shop, diagnosed timing kit to help solve, but not worth spending the money on new timing job or new engine. Nissan and Dealers are well aware that this is a known ongoing issue that will affect EVERY Nissan with this engine sooner or later, and are outright blaming consumers for mis-managing their maintenance.

Be aware, this engine is designed to fail, not unlike their CVT, whether you do 3-5k oil changes or not, and should be a recall item.

Pathfinder Platinum 3.4L

  • CVT transmission
  • 51,000 miles

Took vehicle in to dealer because of white smoke at startup lasting < 10 Seconds. Vehicle had no warning lights or computer codes.

Dealer identified engine as 'sludged' and recommended a complete engine replacement . Vehicle has been primarily used for highway driving >100 miles. Oil was changed s in my experience.

Seems like 51000 mile engine replacement is not typical of Nissan engines.

A local mechanic will replace engine with remanufactured for roughly $12000.
