The rear axle seals on my '04 Nissan Titan, are leaking. This is apparently caused by a poorly designed breather valve. I have checked many forums, and this seems to be a very common problem. My truck is, and has been for a while, out of warranty. However, this seems the problem is a defect, and should be treated as such. However, the Nissan dealership I have had look at it, does not see it that way. For example, you can look at the following: www.titantalk.com/forums/Titan-engine-transmission-drivetrain/42837-rear-axle-seals-leaks-please-report.html.

Bought the Nissan Titan used in November of 2007. I recently found a wet spot on the driver's side wheel (inside) under the brake rotor. I took the truck to the dealership and they said it seems to be a pretty common problem with the Titan. It's a leaking axle seal. This leak was causing brake fluid to leak around and possible onto the brake rotor, calipers, and pads. This is a very dangerous problem due to possible fire and or brake failure.

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Titan. While driving 65 mph, gear oil began leaking from the driver side rear axle. The dealer was unable to determine the cause of the failure, however, they replaced the axle shaft and the axle gear oil. There had been no further occurrences. The failure mileage was 45,000 and current mileage was 50,000. *updated 12/12/07 updated 12/12/07.

Took my truck to the dealership for a 30K mile check up and they found the rear axle seal to be leaking. The seal was replaced but with the same part as originally installed so I worry that I will have the problem again once out of warranty.

Right rear axle seal leaking, fluid leaking onto brake assembly; left rear axle seal seeping. Seals had been leaking for a while. All problems fixed by dealer, but Nissan should use an improved axle seal, and a different axle vent system. The vent does not allow air pressure to return into the axle housing when there is a negative pressure situation. A long vent hose run upwards in the body with a filter is a suggested solution on www.titantalk.com, and people that have experienced numerous axle seal failures have performed this fix and no longer experience problems. Nissan should recall all Titans and pathfinders with this axle vent system and repair the vent with something better. Until this is performed, axle seals will continue to fail and fluid will continue to potentially leak onto brake assemblies.

Titan 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 56,000 miles
Right rear axle seal blew out and leaked differential fluid. Differential fluid leaking on rear brake rotors which could cause brake failure, which was a major safety concern to me. At time of failure at 56,000 miles the rear differential oil will slowly leak and cause the rear differential to lose fluid and fail. Nissan replaced spacer axle (43070-7S200), bearing (40210-7S210), and seal (43252-7S200). As this seemed to be a very common problem with the Nissan Titan, Nissan should address this issue and offer a permanent fix so it would not be faced with the safety issue in the future.

Titan 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 10,624 miles
Axle leaked on left rear wheel. Lubricant leaked on rear brakes. I have a concern that lubricant leak presented a danger with both the standard brake and emergency brake when saturated with leaking lubricant. The working surface of brakes shouldn't be lubricated. I have grave concern that this problem was a design flaw with Nissan Titan trucks and the problem, with the inherent danger, will persist for the useful life of the truck.
