68K miles and now need a new engine. My check engine light came on this last week and I quickly took it into a Certified Autoshop. I went to a certified autoshop that had worked on our other cars and I had trusted. Two days and $400.00 they told me that I needed a new engine and I had low compression in a couple of the cylinders. This car just had just started to run a little rough and I quickly reacted and took my car in. The error codes were random and it was misfiring. It's hard to tell that there is something wrong without the computer and my check engine light. The certified shop said that I had taken care of my car and they had no idea why this would happen. I then went and took my car to the dealership and they said that I should have taken it there and not the other shop. They just dont trust the other auto shops. Two days later and $160.00 the dealership came up with the same diagnastic. But, now they were trying to say that I had poor maintenance. This dealership has had my car for regular maintence. I have taken my car to other shops and my husband has done regular oil changes every 3,000 miles or so. We've maintained this car with regular maintanece and I really loved this car. It's 5K to replace the engine at 68K. The powertrain warrranty expired at 60K. The Nissan service Manager said that I should have purchased the 100k warranty. Take note that at 11K we asked the service manager at the dealership about the ticking noise and they said it was normal. Because the manager did not write this question in his notes, we are out of luck.
I have calls into Nissan this car engine shouldn't fail at 68K with regular maintence.

Lets see....I am so tired of talking about it but here goes. I drove about 400 miles when the engine began to knock. I arrived at my parents home and did not move it until the tow truck picked it up and took it to the Nissan Dealership. The Nissan Certified mechanic asked how often the oil was changed. I told him every 3000 give or take a few over. The mechanic informed me it would require a new engine but because it was past the warranty they would need to file it with the warranty department. The oil changes were done by me give or take a few at Wal-Mart. I also own an American vehicle and it currently has 214,000 miles and it was taken care of in the same manner as the versa. The car still runs great. Same engine and transmission. So, the mechanic told me it is not the first time he has heard this happening to a versa and he firmly believes it is a manufacturers defect. My issue is why would a Nissan Mechanic tell me that if it was not the truth. I am in the middle of hiring an attorney and fighting them. Once I reduce the amount owed on the Versa I will never purchase a Nissan again.

This was a great car until this happened. I took it on a 500 mile round trip and on the way back the engine started making a horrible clanking noise, I took it in and they said it was low on oil. I'm like.. ok.. I had it changed recently. They are like "We might have put too little in" or "A seal my be leaking". This is the dealership by the way and I bought this car brand new. So, that fixes it and it sounds wonderful and drives wonderful again.
3 weeks later on the interstate, the engine cuts out completely! Fortunately I was in the right lane so the shoulder was fairly easy to get to despite the steering wheel locking up. I turned it completely off and tried to start it again.. omg the noise was horrific. It sounded like someone was beating the hood with a metal rod. I tried to get it back onto the interstate thinking "This will be fun to fix tomorrow" and it died again and would not turn back on. I called a friend and then looked at the engine. Nothing looked abnormal but the smell was terrible. It smelled like burning oil and plastic. We got it towed to the dealership to fix and they informed me that it was not going to be covered until warranty. I got sort of crappy. I was like "Nice timing by Nissan!!!" JUST over 2k miles over said warranty.
The had it like 4-5 days before they decided to work on it. Turns out the oil they put into it had burned/leaked/vanished into thin air. Essentially I had been driving this car for up to 3 weeks with no oil in it. The oil light never came on, the check engine light never came on, I JUST had the oil changed AND the oil filter and the car was acting fine up until about 3 minutes before it died.
So yea, there went the motor. Haven't fixed it yet because I can't afford a new freaking engine and I am still paying this thing off. I called Nissan and they were like "Well it happens in that model sometimes" I'm like.. and no recall? Their response was it hasn't happened enough to dictate a recall. They also tried to blame it on me stating I probably didn't change the oil like I should have but they shut up fast when I informed them that I had EVERY oil change receipt ever from this car AND that the people changing the oil was their own dealership's service department.
So yea.. Versa owners you will probably be ok but be warned that you might not be. Also, buy extended warranties!

I bought the car brand new. No previous owner. It's a 2007, but the car has been treated well. Regular oil changes. Just a bulletin, not a recall, but a bulletin, was released about replacing the fuel pump. I did that, too, just to take care of this car. It's only got 65k miles on it, and the engine goes. I've hardly heard of any car having that low a mileage to have engine failure. It's in good shape, too. I love this car!
I've contacted Nissan about this because of the mileage being so low. They said the best they will do is give me an employee discount on a new car, up to $1500 off MSRP, but won't offer any assistance to replacing the engine. I wasn't even asking for them to cover the whole cost, but at least help out some in recovering my Versa. It's a beautiful little car that is so very fun to drive. It handles well and accelerates smoothly. I prefer driving it to any other car I have driven. But, hopefully, I can talk Nissan into helping me out in just the repair cost. Because, basically, a new engine and it's like having a new car, with just a few minor things here and there that might need a small fix over the next five years. Nissan has been great in listening to me, even if they are not quite helping me out in the way I ask.
