I recently purchased a 2008 Nissan Versa SL used with 46,800 miles. I immediately noticed a clunking and popping sound coming from the front end and felt especially through the steering column when it occurs. It mostly occurs when traversing over a curb or drainage ditch, for instance when entering or leaving a parking lot while in a turn and at slow speeds, 10 mph or less.
I have done some research regarding this issue and even called a Nissan Dealer. All they could find was a service bulletin to replace the front shock strut bearings. I took it back to the dealership where I bought it and they ordered and replaced the bearings and complied with the service bulletin. Afterward the ASE certified technician test drove it and found the problem was still there. This seems to be the case every time the service bulletin is complied with. The defect still exists.
Please can you tell me what the bleep is wrong with this thing? I just want it fixed. The ASE tech said it could be a Rack and pinion but he isn't sure. I found one report that this may have caused an accident. There have been two complaints with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration about this very issue. I also file one for my car today. My local Nissan dealer does not acknowledge the problem, but with the NHTSA getting involved I hope something will eventually be done. I have written Nissan USA and am waiting for a response. I am calling an attorney tomorrow to get then involved just in-case this all goes south.
