Vehicle lost control exiting a right hand curve of a county road. The vehicles speed at the time of the crash is estimated at approximately 55-65 mph. A post-crash mechanical inspection of the vehicle was completed. The inspection revealed the splines on the steering wheel and the steering shaft had been damaged. This damage was consistent in appearance with the wheel being placed on the shaft and pressed via the steering wheel nut when the splines were out of alignment. The steering wheel nut was able to be spun with one finger during the inspection. Both findings were not consistent with the expected crash damage given the crash sequence. An airbag recall had been fulfilled on the vehicle in October 2019 in which the steering wheel was removed. The recall was fulfilled by a Nissan dealership in greeley, co. The consumer provided photos.

The contact owns a 2010 Nissan Versa. While driving 20 mph, the contact noticed an abnormal burning odor coming from the steering wheel area of the control panel. The contact also heard an abnormal popping sound. Shortly after, the contact lost control of the vehicle as it spun out of control and crashed into a ditch. The air bags did not deploy. There were no injuries. A police report was filed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that a new front bumper needed to be installed and dents on the rear passenger doors needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign number: 17V449000 (air bags). The failure mileage was 120,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

The steering wheel suddenly started turning all the way to the left on its own while I was driving straight about 50mph on the highway. The steering wheel locked in this position and was impossible to turn back to a neutral position. The car veered all the way to the right, causing me to spin several times before hitting the concrete barrier. The airbags did not deploy after hitting the concrete barrier. We always took my car for all necessary recalls, the last of which was on 6/12/2018 for airbags. The car was unable to change gears and was impounded by insurance. ## VIN passed ## Nissan Versa 2010 hatchback ## updated 10/11/18 consumer stated the vehicle was deemed unrepairable and we were paid out by insurance. I believe it was at an auction last I heard. Updated 10/18/18

Spring broke unexpectedly, while driving at a low velocity. It's hard to believe that a spring can break as it did. The vehicle has low miles, and the mechanic couldn't bekieve it himself. Mechanic informed me that he has repaired two other vehicles, same make and year with the same exact issue, and the same exact side. My estimate for the repairs is $1,500. If Nissan is aware of the issue, and has done nothing about it, they should be ashamed of theirselves. This is a safety hazard that can lead to injury or even fatalities. I have been buying Nissan vehicles for almost twenty years, but this has made me lose confidence in the company.

I was driving out of a parking lot at 10 mph and heard a loud pop sound coming from the passengers side front wheel area and smelled burning rubber. I pulled over and noticed a 360 degree gash in the front passenger tire sidewall. I took the tire off and noticed the suspension spring was broken and was scraping the sidewall of the tire.

Driving in snowy/icy conditions. Vehicle started angle towards oncoming vehicle (large power company bucket/boom truck). The trucks driver (there were more than one) saw me coming at him. The truck moved to the side of the road to avoid me. I collided into the driver corner of the large truck head-on. Bumper went into the engine. Tail-end of my vehicle swung around to meet his driver side with my passenger side. When my vehicle broke loose from the bumper, the whole front end came off and part of the engine came out. Once I collided with my passenger side, I spun around hitting the rear of my vehicle as well. I slid back across the road as I was spinning into a small area near a fence. That is where the vehicle stopped. I had to be cut out of the vehicle. Now.... after all this; the only air bag that blew was the curtain bag on the passenger side. The driver curtain airbag, the airbag in the steering wheel nor the passenger airbag in the dash did not go off. I have suffered body(physical and mental) damage from this accident. I feel that since I hit head-on, the driver airbag should have deployed. I do believe this is a defect that Nissan does not want to admit to.
