I bought my 2006 Nissan Xterra in 2008 with 18,000 miles on it. It was in great shape. Last summer I noticed the check engine light come on and the fuel tank wouldn't register correctly. When the tank is about 2/3 full the check engine light will go off for a while....when I fill up the check engine light goes on and it won't register the fuel. What I'm mad about is there was a recall on this but I never received any notice of it. I was told that the recall date was up even though I was way under the required cut-off on mileage....having such low mileage. They said the fix would cost almost $500 - I take good care of this vehicle and would have had it fixed under the recall if I had known about it!!! I think they should take care of this.

Contacted Nissan about our 2006 Xterra exhibiting the issued described in NHTSA Recall Campaign #10V075000-- gas gauge sticks and misreads, ie, after full 19.5 gallon fill, gauge will read BELOW empty for an hour or two, or a day, or..., then maybe come unstuck and read correctly. However, it also throws a "Service Engine Soon" light on the dash -- OBDII code is P0463 (Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit High Input). This problem is highly repeatable, and usually happens when the tank gets to 1/4 or so, and on warm days. The NHTSA recall describes this exact issue, and Nissan has a "fix" (which is basically to bend the float arm in the gas tank so it doesn't hit the side wall of the tank, which has become warped due to a very poor design-- plastic tank is very long, and is only supported on the ends, leaving the entire middle to warp under the weight of 19.5 gallons of gas). Nissan has refused to fix my vehicle because "the VIN is not included in the recall..." This clearly means their recall is not all-encompassing of the problem. Thus far, Nissan has made NO effort to accommodate this issue, but rather has simply told me, in effect... too bad. If they don't step up and resolve this, this WILL be my last Nissan. There are too many competitors in the marketplace to put up with poor quality, poor design, and poor customer service.
Update from Sep 23, 2012: Update: Sent letter to Nissan corporate, asking them to stand behind their product and their advertised commitment to customer satisfaction by fixing the issue. After several phone calls from them, where each time I had to replay the entire issue (don't they write anything down?), they responded that they would NOT fix the vehicle. The followed up with a letter, where the state "As a company interested in winning lifetime customers...," followed by lots of ambiguous commentary, followed by "Nissan is unable to offer financial assistance with the repair...." I traded in the vehicle the following day... NOT on a Nissan. And I have contacted NHTSA to ensure my complaint is properly logged with them. Nissan didn't win any lifetime customer with me on this issue. Instead, they lost a lifetime customer... this was my last Nissan, and I plan to make sure others in my sphere of influence are aware of my experience with Nissan's unwillingness to stand behind their product.

Called Koeppel Nissan Dealer, gave them my VIN number. Said that it was a warranty recall not a manufacturer's recall. What is the difference?, Manufacturer recall does not expire. Warranty recall expires after 12 months. Cost of $ 500.00 and upward to repair. Told fix it yourself by Koppel Nissan Dealership. Heck with Nissan, in New York City I found that Nissan Xterra's were left for the Sanitation Department for pick up. Nissan's are just scrap metal from the recycling soda machines. I have swore never to purchase a Nissan again. This vehicle was purchased NEW from dealership.

Tried to trade in at a Honda Dealership for a CRV. They wouldn't even consider a trade in value over $5,000.00. Ha, ha, what a piece of Nissan Junk
Update from Apr 29, 2015: So, my radiator finally cracked and the coolant leaked into my transmission and destroyed my Xterra at 49,000 miles. Just to let everyone know, Nissan should have contacted all Xterra, Armada and Pathfinder owners for a easy fix, external coolant radiators from the antifreeze tank. But they didn't, and want $ 3,000.00 copay to fix the problem, when it would have cost them $ 49.99. Such A-holes.
Now I just found out my 2009 Nissan Sentra CVT transmission has problems, luckily dealer said its under warranty. Not only that, Nissan sent out postcards to all Nissan owners with authorized towing company. Tow your broke down Nissan back so we can rip you off even more.
Nissan should be OUT-OF-BUSINESS by 2018 or brought by FIAT. Fix It Again Tony
