Nissan dealership notified me about needing to replace the entire timing chain system. After doing research, it is evident Nissan knew about faulty timing chain tensioners and guides that it was using on certain model year Xterras, including 2007. If timing chain fails while vehicle is in motion, it can lead to catastrophic engine failure and a $8000+ repair bill for a new engine. Nissan knowing about this problem sent service bulletins to its service centers but did not inform consumers about the problem. The timing chain should be good for the life of the engine, but now my local dealership is telling me it is going to cost at least $1900 to replace the timing chain and all components. Nissan knew the components are faulty and yet don't care enough to inform consumers. This isn't the first time this has happened. Nissan knew that the transmission coolers on same model year were faulty and did not inform consumers. Class action lawsuit forced Nissan to face the music, but consumers still had to pay over $2000 out of pocket to replace transmission, transmission cooler, and radiator.

So I have a 2007 Xterra and have already had to replace the transmission (prorated at 1750.00 based on mileage) due to the coolant issue class action lawsuit. I am out if warranty and I believe my mileage is now 90,000 and change...maybe a bit less like 88,000 but I was told at the time of the transmission replacement that I'm going to need the timing chain issue we all know about fixed as well. This was about 4,000 miles ago and less than a year ago. How many miles can I still drive before needing to really worry about it and get it fixed?

I didn't really hear it myself but not a car person and do notice a whine overall but assumed it was normal and just the sound of the new transmission because I'm not hearing and rattling IR anything and my rpm gauge isn't.jumping nor do I see oil pressure hopping around but I don't wanna wait to long and have it cause other damage if and when it goes, so how many safe miles can be put on it before I should really consider having it fixed. Has anyone heard anything regarding the class action on this timing chain/tensioner issue and are they prorating customer cost like they did with the transmission/coolant issue or is customer having to pay in full unless under warranty?

My warranty is no more. Any advice suggestions would be great!!! I'm not a wrencher so can't do the job myself and would rather take to Nissan unfortunately but so it gets done right. Thoughts anyone? Thank you. It's again, a 2007 non 4WD model, automatic with the V6 4.0 litre engine. Thank you
