I started having issues with my car on the way home from work in rush hour traffic about two months ago. The car felt like it was going to stall and was slipping out of gear and I was only going 10 mph. I finally made it home and I took it to a local mechanic who told me that it might be a converter, which turned out it wasn't. Now mind you my check engine light never came on the entire time I was having issues with the car so I didn't really know what was wrong I just knew the car wasn't running correctly. So I got the converter replaced like he suggested and a week later the car did the same thing were it was slipping out of gear. I took it back to the guy and told him it was still not fixed. He had the car for 4 days and then calls me and tells me that he spoke to a Nissan mechanic at the Nissan company who told him that radiator fluid in the transmission was a known issue with them but that they didn't do a recall or send out notices about the issue. My mechanic asked about what they could do for me but since my car was over 100,000 mile the Nissan representative said that there was nothing Nissan would do. I will never in my life give my money to that f#cking Nissan company again. They are asshole's for not letting their customers know up front about issues they are fully aware of. I am a single mother and can't afford to get the piece of sh*t car fixed or buy another one. They really put my family in a die hard situation.

My vehicle is a 2007 Nissan Xterra and the coolant leaked onto my transmission and I had no idea about this type of issue that the Nissan brand has been having...I really feel like I have been in the dark about this issue. I am a single mother of two and I am trying to put my son through college and take care of my household. This is a bill I can't afford. I don't know what I should do in this matter...I truly need options that will allow me to keep my vehicle. Also I want to mention if Nissan knew about these issues why didn't t the get in contact with and other owners to get this problem fixed so we can keep the vehicle. Everybody can't afford New vehicles when they are on a tight budget trying to take care of their families.

The issue is same as other have had, however Side effects apparently do not matter to Nissan,

The car was taken to the dealer for the issue and when i went to collect it the system had the same Milky residue known to the mixture. The response, we do not clean the lines or flush the system. You have to pay to get it fixed.

This is what is completely and utterly ridiculous. We have to pay to flush the car and change a thermostat due to the mixture of the oil. Cost about 500$. they replace your radiator but the lines, nope nada. Even though anyone with half a brain can see that this introduces debris to the coolant system pumps and other components.

They won't even guarantee that this will be an issue, that means your car is only half repaired and more than likely will have other issues as a result from a band aid job. Who in their right mind changes the transmission and then said nope to cover the coolant which is an obvious effect from this faulty engineering.

Nissan Needs to cover the entire assembly and inclusion to whatever the liquid touched.

Like all the other problems I have read about our radiator broke and leaked fluid into the transmission causing the transmission to fail. We had the radiator and transmission replaced and the Xterra is still in the shop. We were out of the mileage range even if we had know about the lawsuit. Its really sad that Nissan has failed like this.

coolant leaked into transmission coolant leaked into transmission

My vehicle started making noise like driving over a rumble strip. At first I thought it was the road itself. After it occurred a few more times I realized it was my vehicle and I suspected the transmission since the sound stopped immediately as I stepped off the gas pedal.

By the time I got home, my temperature gauge was at the very top on the High indicator. I thought how could the thermostat or water pump go out at the same time the transmission started making noise. While I let the vehicle cool down, I looked online and found all these complaints about Nissan radiators leaking into the transmission. I went and checked the radiator and it was full of a grey creamer substance. I would guess it's in the thermostat, water pump and all the lines and hoses. I checked the transmission dip stick and it was also covered in the grey slime. Why do I have to pay $2500 to have them fix a lemon that Nissan knows about? That's a good deal for them. Sell an inferior product and charge the suckers to have it fixed.

coolant leaked into transmission

As soon as I noticed a slight shudder or slip when starting from a stop, I parked my Xterra. I only knew of the potential problem from a coworker who had same 2007 Xterra and his failed at 102,000 miles, no compensation for him from Nissan. WTH?

So I had mine looked at then with 112,000 and Nissan said approx. $800 to replace radiator INCASE I might have a failure. I said NO.

Well, at 155,423 I felt the slip. drove it home, waited for it to cool down and opened the radiator. I've attached a pic of my latte colored coolant. I figured I was completely screwed. A call to Nissan, immediately quoted at least $6,000. WTH??? the trade in is under $5000.

But fortunately I have a brother who knows apparently a little about cars. He drained, replaced radiator and flushed cooling system. Then completely drained and replaced transmission fluid. Hoping that the transmission had not been damaged.

So far so good. I have not experience the slip since.

I just wonder if flushing the transmission again would possibly help??? or should I just leave well enough alone.

Nissan sent me a warranty notification letter stating that there MAY be a problem with the transmission and radiator. The letter extended the warranty to 80,000 miles. When I ask the dealer about replacing the transmission; he said they couldn't until it started acting up. Of course that was at 96,400 miles. By that time the dealer told me that the class action lawsuit had taken effect, but because I had over 90K miles i would have to pay $3000, my part for the repair. They offered to take it in on trade for a new one. Why would I want another Nissan P.O.S!

Nissan knew the part was bad. They had a chance to do the right thing and fix it correctly. They chose to stick it to the customer. Not sure when I will get it fixed or if I will let Nissan make more money off of me. Will probably take it to a transmission shop to be fixed.

I can't believe that Nissan has not/will not recall this obvious manufacturers defect and replace the radiator and transmission at their cost on affected vehicles. Better yet, why wasn't I notified of the problem so that I could replace the radiator prior to the damage being done?

Not what I would have expected from Nissan. This will definitely have me looking elsewhere when I purchase my next vehicle.

Update from May 19, 2016: I ended up replacing the Radiator and transmission through the Nissan offer but I still had to pay $3,000 out of pocket. I feel completely ripped off, especially due to the fact that Nissan has known about this problem for years and did nothing to notify consumers so that we could have avoided costly repairs by simply replacing the radiator before it failed.

The mechanic told me that XTerras have this problem where the transmission fluid line in the radiator breaks destroying both systems. Just my luck that my warranty was over when this happened. From what I've seen on the internet, I'm not eligible for compensation in the settlement that Nissan entered into either. Nissan really should do right by their customers if they want to keep them.

Nissan knows what the problem is and that it is very costly! As a single parent with two children, I can't afford to fix the car, can't afford a new car! Can't get any help from Nissan! Have been a very loyal customer who has never missed a payment. The car will be paid off in October, it cost more to get the car fixed than the payoff!! I need desperate help!!!

So, in November of 2013 I start to experience some odd jerking motion from the tranny as it attempts to shift. 4 weeks go by and it has now gotten to be a real concern it is jerking real bad and my oil change place tells me the tranny fluid is low? What? So I take it to a mechanic and they tell me I'm lucky. This model is known for the radiator failing and leaking coolant into the Transmission and causing severe damage to the Transmission. I, however, had the opposite condition. My radiator had failed and caused transmission fluid to leak into the coolant system. They assured me that this was not as big a problem and replaced the radiator with an updated part that would not cause this failure again. 1300+ dollars later. Drove the car to Prescott Az and back to Santa Cruz CA with no problem straight for 13hrs each way(mind you in one day for each leg) Here we are 9000 miles later and the same problem occurs again. The shop I took it to guaranteed the work for 2 yrs so they are doing it again as we speak. I am outraged at the lack of Nissan's responsibility on this matter. Thousand's if not millions of Nissan owners are out there unaware. The Class Action Lawsuit that one will soon learn about IS A JOKE!!!!!!! Give me a break! Really Nissan? I will never buy a Nissan again. It appears if the problem doesn't occur to thousands at the same time, IT ISN'T CONSIDERED A REAL PROBLEM!? I'm forced to trade this car for a lower value and cut my losses. I HOPE YOU ARE READING THIS "NISSAN" FOR THIS IS A VERY REAL HARDSHIP TO MY LIVELY HOOD. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PUTTING AN INFERIOR PRODUCT ON THE ROAD! :(

I bought this car used in October 2013 from a Highway Patrolman for $8000 my whole life savings. I lost my job soon after that. and have not been able to find another yet. I have a 11 daughter. I have sold or lost everything that's worth anything. Except for my Xterra. If I would have known about this problem I would have had the radiator replaced when I bought it. But I did not know because Nissan did not warn owners or make it public about the problem. There was no recall. Just a (Bullshit) extended warranty with a $3000 deductible. I cant even buy groceries, there is no way I will ever be able to get it fixed. I use to think very highly of Nissan. Not any more. I want them to man up and recall this faulty part. With no charge to the owner.

I have had my Xterra for a little over a year and just the other day my car starts overheating. Pull into the Shell station to grab some antifreeze and low and behold there it is. My antifreeze mixed with my transmission fluid everywhere. Mine is grey and the consistency is that of a milkshake. Researching the Xterra before buying it, there was no talk of big problems. Now that I'm trying to figure out what to do, it's everywhere. And I'm not alone!

That's the most shocking. It's amazing to me a company as big as Nissan has yet to issue any recall. Regardless of the year or mileage, it should be fixed. It's a very common problem with not just a couple cars but hundreds and not just one make either. I guess unless it starts to affect lives and not just our bank accounts we are all SOL.

NEEDS RECALL!!!!! Driving out of town for the weekend and my Xterra just quits in the middle of nowhere. Cost me $150 to tow back to dealership. Told me today that radiator and transmission need to be replaced at a cost of $6250. The timing belt HAD to be replaced also they said at a grand total of $8000.

Less than 6 months ago I paid $1600 because it wouldn't hold a charge and needed to replace OEM computer system.

My 2007 Xterra has been problems from the start. The transmission, radiator, timing belts, fuel gauge, rear axle, heat would never work.....on and on.
