This week my son's 2007 Nissan Xterra would not start and we had it towed to a Nissan dealership near his college in Scranton PA. Yesterday we were informed that the transmission and radiator need to be replaced, at a cost of around $5000! This is shocking because my son insists that he noticed nothing amiss with the operation of his truck until it he was unable to start it. After spending 10 minutes on the internet, I learned about the Nissan transmission class action lawsuit. We have been religious in terms of scheduled maintenance, and overall care of the vehicle. We were not aware of the cooling/transmissions problems plaguing Nissan trucks. In addition, I have had the vehicle serviced at two separate Nissan dealerships, one in New York and another now in PA. It is disgraceful that neither Nissan dealership mentioned anything! This morning I contacted Nissan corporate and was told that since the vehicle is over 100,000, there is nothing they can do for us. I do not have $5000 and do not know what to do with my sons Nissan. As others have mentioned in postings, there likely many others with vehicles over the 100,000 marker, now just experiencing the negative effects of the defective manufacturing by Nissan. There should be a second class action suit filed against Nissan!!!

I am very disappointed and disgusted with the way Nissan has handled this problem. My Xterra 2007's transmission did not go bad until it reached over 100K miles. My wife was driving cross country with my children and all of the sudden she felt the gears slipping while driving on a major interstate. Luckily she was able to drive home safely.

I found out shortly after this almost catastrophic experience that there were many complaints regarding Nissan's transmission problems. I guess there was a class action lawsuit that only covered vehicles under 100K miles. Why is Nissan only providing assistance to vehicles under 100K miles if there is a defect in the transmission coolant. They should cover any transmission problems regardless of what the mileage is. I took my Xterra to AAMCO because they charge thousands of dollars less of what a Nissan dealership would have charged me.

I have been a loyal Nissan owner since 2003 and will never buy a vehicle from them again. In fact, I have convinced friends and families not to buy Nissan vehicles because of the poor service that they have provided.

I first noticed a stuttering when driving and a clunking sound when moving the shifter from park to reverse to drive in February. Also experienced no heat and overheating in March. Upon repair of thermostat, draining the radiator showed an accumulation of thick grey gunk in the coolant. Thermostat seal itself was melted. Had dealer evaluate clunking sound and they diagnosed it as intermix (the problem identified in the coolant) as a manufacturing defect in the radiator/transmission cooling components that allows the coolant to contaminate the transmission fluid causing transmission damage. Dealership explained that mileage was over the Nissan warranty limit of 100,000 even though the problem did not manifest until almost 120,000 miles. Recommended fix was in stages - 1) replace radiator and transmission flush $1200++

2) if problem is not solved, replace transmission $4000++

Have talked with Nissan corporate to no avail as yet.

However...

I did some research and spoke with Gary Graifman, of Kantrowitz, Goldhamer & Graifman, PC who was the Co-Lead Class Counsel of the original class action lawsuit. I explained to him that in my estimation the settlement fell far short, as it excluded many Nissan owners who were fortunate enough to have their vehicles run properly for over 100,000 miles. That luck, however, should not exempt Nissan from their responsibility for having originally installed defective parts. He explained to me that since I was over the mileage limit as stated in the settlement, that I have been virtually excluded from THIS case, but that further action could be taken against Nissan in a subsequent class action suit for those of us in a similar situation if we could get enough people together. As I read the posts, it seems that could be accomplished.

Here are the facts:

Nissan allowed the repeated manufacture and sale of vehicles with a defective radiator that allowed the cross-contamination of coolant and transmission fluid and damaged the radiator and transmission.

A previous class action lawsuit ended in settlement for owners to receive a "co-pay" arrangement from Nissan for repairs if their mileage was under 100,000

There are a multitude of owners whose vehicles have exceeded that 100,000 marker who are just now experiencing the negative effects of the defective manufacturing by Nissan.

These owners also deserve to be represented.

I propose that we file a second class action suit against Nissan for re-compensation for repairs that we have had to pay for.

Just after 100,000 miles the car started vibrating. I wish Nissan would have at least let us know there was a problem. I didn't know there was a problem. I would have spent the money to fix it before this happened. I'm told $5000 to fix

I have a 2007 Nissan Xterra which started to "stutter" and hesitate when pressing the gas. The car almost felt like it was shutting off while on I-4 highway. Then shuts down and won't start. I had the car checked and found out that there was a crack in my radiator and that the fluid had leaked over into the transmission. I had the radiator replaced, a few months later, transmission is still not working.

I took the car to Nissan, they told me I would have to replace the whole transmission which would run about $5200. I called the Nissan Headquarters and was told that there was nothing they could do because my truck was at 109,000 miles. Don't understand why Nissan isn't being held totally accountable for their mishap.

I am very upset for the fact that Nissan will not do anything about their problem of the radiator bursting/leaking and coolant going into the transmission. It would have helped that there could have been some kind of warning so that way we could have been prepared for it to be fixed prior to the damage already done. Also, being that I cannot afford to go out and by a new vehicle much less am not able to afford payments on another vehicle I am a really pissed off person.

I bought the Xtera because I love my car. I can't believe that Nissan is allowing their loyal customers to have to deal with this and not compensate or recall their problem. Makes me not want to ever buy another Nissan again. I had thought about getting another Xterra in the future, but not now.

Have had the '07 Nissan Xterra for about 5 years. Bought pre-owned with 27,000 miles, and put 100,000 miles on it since then. Religious in terms of scheduled maintenance, and overall care of the SUV. Had been a very reliable vehicle for us, up until today. We were not aware of cooling/transmissions problems plaguing Nissan trucks. As soon as we pulled into the garage of our mechanic, and described the problem - transmission slipping and only able to stay in "drive" - he suspected what it was. Upon a quick troubleshoot, we saw that there was water in trans fluid, and the radiator water looked like milkshake. Initial estimate is $5200.00!!! Tranny is shot, tranny computer burned up and inoperable, radiator must be replaced and lines will need a serious flush and/or replacement. Our Xterra will be keeping company in the garage with a 2010 Nissan Pathfinder...which is also getting worked on - WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM!!!!! Our mechanic mentioned he'd seen a few Nissan trucks come in with this problem, and when doing research online, discovered that the cooling/tranny problem was rather widespread. For him to have two in his garage with the same problem in the same week speaks poorly to Nissan and to this issue. Mechanic said that judging by the variety of years and milage in the Nissan's he has worked on, this isn't just wear and tear! Nissan should take responsibility for what is either a tremendous design or construction flaw in the cooling system. That it caused a CATASTROPHIC problem with the transmission is OUTRAGEGOUS!

I am crushed! There were no warning signs that this was going to occur. After happening, I did some research and found out that Nissan knew about the problem. There was actually a lawsuit filed and settled without Nissan taking any responsibility for the faulty design. I think it is completely ridiculous that Nissan knew about and chose not to inform consumers about the potential hazard. If I had known about this problem I could have replaced the radiator before it ruined my transmission.

I am completely shocked that the NHTSA has an open investigation! I can't believe that after years of bringing my truck to Martin Nissan in Skokie, Illinois, they did not warn me once about this issue. I feel that without Nissan taking responsibility for this flawed design, they are sending the message that they are not concerned about the life threatening issue here. I guess nobody is going to do anything until a couple of lives are lost, and, even then, Nissan will probably just pay off their families so they can avoid a recall!

Just had to replace a Radiator and Transmission in my 2007 Xterra. I bought this car brand new. Always maintained and kept everything up to date. Paid it off years ago - been extremely happy with my car. Until 131,000 miles hit. And had to replace the Radiator and Transmission. No notice of anything wrong with hit - no Check Engine light coming on. Just all of a sudden started shuttering - and noticed while sitting at a stand still my heat would no longer blow hot air. Noticed that the shuttering was getting worse. Had it checked with a well known transmission chain and they wanted $5,900 to do the work. Said no thanks - moved on to the next well known chain - and they did it for 3800.00. Not that the price is much better - but damn. I was seriously considering buying a New Xterra - this quickly changed my mind.

Transmission failure while driving. Dealership said that the problem is a failed transmission fluid cooler located in the radiator assembly that allowed coolant to mix and contaminate the automatic transmission fluid resulting in damage to the internal transmission components and a damaged internal transmission computer. There's no prior warnings signs leading up to failures. The Nissan Corporation is well aware of this problem happening to these vehicles..

With no warning service engine light coming on, car ran erratically. The transmission and radiator needed to be replaced. It is inherently dishonest for Nissan to not admit to a transmission cooler manufacturing defect, and notify people like me that certain steps might be taken to prevent a possible problem. It is tough to pay a bill of $5844 when there is so much documentation on this manufacturing defect.

I am not buying anymore Nissans. This problem was of their own making, and their response to it was unethical, at my expense. This was not normal wear and tear.

Similar problem to others...Xterra was in shop for unrelated issue and mechanic mentioned transmission sounds off and recommended I have Nissan look at it as he was aware of this issue. Paid Nissan dealer $108 for a diagnosis which confirmed issue and was told it would cost me $3000 (for a $7000k repair)....still going back and forth with consumer affairs but based on everyone else's outcome doubt I'll get any help from them. Will post resolution but I'm probably going to have to spend $1000 for new radiator and transmission flush...last Nissan my family will ever own. • Automatic transmission

My sister took her 2007 Nissan X-terra in for problems she was having. The dealership told her the radiator was leaking into the transmission and it would cost $11,000 to fix. My sister's husband was at home in a wheel chair due to a fall, my sister was very emotional and knew she could not come up with $11,000. She was aware the cost to fix the problem was about half the value of a new car so in her emotional state, she agreed to trade it for a new car. The other problem is that she had borrowed money on the car and owed $11,000 on the loan. So my sister had to trade her x-terra for a rogue that was valued at $21,000. So now she owes $30,000 for the new car due to the dealership tagging on the $11,000 she owed on the bank loan of the x-terra. A few days later we found out about the class action lawsuit for the transmission problem. The lawsuit had already been settled but my sister was not aware of the lawsuit. The next week we contacted the dealership to get a copy of the papers that told what was wrong with the x-terra and they refused to give us a copy. If my sister had known that she could possibly only have had to pay $3,000 to get the vehicle fixed versus the $11,000 she was quoted, she could have come up with the $3,000. So now instead of owing just $14,000 for the x-terra she is stuck with paying back $30,000. The Nissan company and dealership cheated my sister. The Nissan corporation passed the buck to the dealership. Will never purchase a Nissan and will inform everyone of the bad quality, bad service and low down practices that Nissan represents.

I have a 2007 Nissan Xterra that I received two years ago as a graduation present from my father. The day I graduated and received the car, my father went in for his 1st round of chemotherapy for Leukemia. He had been diagnosed a few weeks earlier, and despite this he was determined to find me a reliable car as a gift to help start my career. My father passed two months later and this car is the last thing he gave to me.

Three months ago the check engine light went on in my car, I waited a few days thinking the sensor was wrong as I had just bought new tires and had a few other maintenance procedures performed a few months back. Two days later, as I tried to reverse out of a parking spot my car instead went into neutral and was almost hit by another vehicle. I was shaken and called my local Nissan service center. They were courteous and told me to bring it in for a look, when describing the symptoms the man said it may be a problem with the radiator and transmission which is pretty common on these vehicles. A few days later his suspicions were confirmed and they said that this was due to a faulty design in the engine which causes the radiator fluid to leak into the transmission and corrupts both parts. I was relieved to hear there was a warranty, but my car is currently at 105,120 miles, and the warranty ends at 100,000 miles.

The cost to replace my radiator and transmission is being quoted at close to $6,000 dollars, about half of the purchase price 2 years ago. Now there is an investigation that has been open for over a year for the 05-07 models and it is going nowhere. There are hundreds of complaints! What makes me mad is that there is now another investigation with the NHTSA but for the 2013 xterra having leaking transmissions and yet they don't connect the two problems. Why did it take hundreds of complaints for the other years for them to investigate but with the 2013 models they acted quickly on 11?

I am not contacting you to complain but to get an immediate resolution to this current situation. Earlier last week, I went to Southern Cal to visit my daughter and brother and to take care of some business. Upon returning home, I was in heavy traffic and traveling between speeds of 35-40 mph. However, when the traffic speed increased, I attempted to accelerate but had difficulty doing so. When I stepped on the gas pedal the rmp’s increased but my speed would not. I was able to get home by gradually stepping on the gas pedal and allowing the speed to increase slowly to 60 – 65mph. Upon returning home I noticed that I had a light oily film on my back window. During the whole trip no indicator lights came on to warn me that anything was wrong. It wasn’t until July 5th that the “service engine soon” light came on. I called for an appointment and one was scheduled for me the following day, July 6th. Upon getting my car to the dealership, I explained to the rep. what I had experienced earlier in the week and what I was still experiencing. The rep stated that I should hope that it is just leaking transmission fluid and he took my car in for a diagnostic test. A few hours later, the rep called to inform me that my radiator failed. I asked at that time, “How could that be since a radiator indicator light did not come on?” He stated that the light would not come on to monitor the radiator failing. He then stated that as a result of my radiator failing that the radiator fluid mixed with the transmission fluid. As a result, I would have to replace both the radiator and transmission costing approximately $6800. How can this be since I get my car serviced regularly? This does not appear to be normal wear and tear on my vehicle. Through no fault of my own, I believe that this this engineering / manufacturing defect where over time it allows fluids to mix from one chamber into the other. I truly believe that since this is an inherent problem with 3 generations on three separate models of Nissan cars, that it should be a recalled item. Or better yet, since they, Nissan rep., know that this is likely to happen, why not just suggest to the customers at 80K miles to replace the radiator, therefore, it is less likely for this situation to occur? However, I want it to be made known that this is definitely a safety issue because when my radiator failed I was several hundreds miles away from home and on the freeway. This leaves me in a cumbersome situation because I need my vehicle to get back and forth to teach summer school. I am the only teacher on the campus and I teach Special Needs children. I would like to know what can be done in order for me to get back and forth to work without worry or fret that my car will break down? What are some of my options since the work on my vehicle was quoted at $6800? I do not have that type of money to get the necessary repairs done to my vehicle. So again I ask, what are my options? And are you able to help to an extent that the repairs done to my vehicle would not be burdensome to me?
