Xterra

  • Automatic transmission
  • 165,000 miles

I'm at 165000 miles, with engine coolant clear, when heater is turned on strange smell. I am due for oil change, and I am considering having the automatic transmission fluid flush and engine coolant flush.

Xterra RWD 40

  • Automatic transmission
  • 800 miles

I drove the car for the first time to New York and had an engine smell eek into the car whenever I accelerated on an open road in the middle of the night. When I set the temperature control knob to either all cool or all heat, the smell eeks in. I took the car to the dealer with a complaint and was told that it was the cabin filter that was the problem. I had that changed at the dealership and was then told that it should "fix" the problem. It happened again (and again and again) but I was told that it is a "flap" that allows air from the engine to come in and the way to remedy this is to close the flap by pressing the air "re-circulator" button. The problem with this fix is that I constantly have to have that button pressed and the a/c on all the time (stealing power from the engine) to avoid the nasty engine smell. If this was a used car, I would not have bothered to complain, but on a brand new car less that 600 miles in!?!?! Other than that, I have no other major complaints.
