I own two Chrysler minivan that have rusted strut towers, and I took them to my favorite body shop. I have been told that almost every Chrysler mini van has had this, and to go to the dealer due to a recall. There is no such recall, and was told by the dealer it has been a issue.

The contact owns a 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager. The contact noticed severe corrosion and rust on the front struts. The failure has caused the front two tires to abnormally move up and down. He took the vehicle to the dealer and a technician referenced service bulletin number 23-04-02 for the same failure. Since there was not an official recall, the dealer would not assume any liability for the repair costs. The manufacturer did not provide any assistance. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 172,000.

Strut towers rusting out. Noticed this condition approx. 2 years ago when vehicle was less than 5 years old. Researching the problem, it seems many other Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan owners have the same problem. Found tsb#23-044-02 which refers to this problem. Sudden failure of the strut tower could result in loss of steering and/or sudden stopping force applied on one side of vehicle as a tire impacts a wheel well.

The top of the driver's side front shock tower, as viewed from under the hood, is very corroded. Mechanic advised getting rid of vehicle as soon as possible or face extensive $ repairs for shock tower and strut. Area of corrosion was professionally rust proofed in 1998 and was still able to corrode. I wonder how bad the corrosion is on these vehicles that were not rust proofed? shock tower corrosion appears to be an ongoing problem with all 1996-2001 Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth minivans. Its only a matter of time before struts start popping through the hoods on these vehicles, thus causing accidents. Advise NHTSA to investigate as soon as possible.
