The tail light assembly on my 1995 Pontiac Bonneville SSE is supported by 3 plastic studs that are part of the tail light assembly. I believe thermal stress between the plastic studs and the metal housing plate result in failure of the mounting studs and the three studs fail leave the assembly hanging by the wiring. I had both rear tail light assemblies fail in the last 5 years. There is no sign of physical contact and both appeared after exposure to hot summer sunlight.
But the "good" news is that a new assembly only cost $300!
