I was told this was not a safety issue and would cost about $300 to fix.* It is due to that you can't get down into the steering shaft to lubricate it. So they would fix it by replacing a part (that doesn't need lube(?)) -
The date thing on this site is a mess and gives today as the date it occurred - but it was at 6000 miles in 2008 when I would notice it just when parking or steering in small space. *Probably more by now.
I love my SSEI beauty and have no other complaint about it except that they are extinct now.

As I have read in other complaints, there is a clunking noise in the steering mechanism. Shop wants $500 to replace/repair steering column. I don't know if this is a safety issue, I figure maybe an accident and lawsuit on GM may prompt them into action on this issue.

Very good car so far, Just bought in Oct 2011 with 127,000. Everything is good except for the terrible clucking in steering, when turning sharp or when backing or parking. I also noticed the steering interlock does not work. Hey you mechanics out there, any connection?
Maybe just a simple replacement of interlock mechanism? Watch out for unintended air bag deployment. Disconnect batter first.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Update from Apr 4, 2012: Got a definite quote on a fix for the steering shaft clunking noise when you turn steering wheel at low speeds like in a parking lot or backing out of driveway. Replace the intermediate shaft in the steering column $180 for a new GM shaft redesigned, and $127 labor to replace
