Bonneville SE 3800

  • Automatic transmission
  • 114,000 miles

IF YOU DON'T FIX THE PROBLEM AS SOON AS YOU NOTICE IT, YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION. IF YOU CATCH IT QUICKLY, YOU ONLY HAVE TO REPLACE A SENSOR, BUT IT IS STILL EXPENSIVE BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION HAS TO COME OUT.

Bonneville SE 3.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 106,000 miles

Took 05 Bonne on trip to Rockies, performed great while on open road, shifted fine into and out of overdrive while ascending and descending mountains. I knew about this car doing hard shifts in the lower gears especially when fluids warm and coasting say down to 5-15 mph and then suddenly accelerating. This was already happening 4k miles back. Arrived in Denver, got stuck in rush hour, and issues with hard shifting began. Every time I slowed down to less than 15 mph and then accelerated, it felt like some vehicle had tapped the rear of my car. It was quite unnerving because I was afraid the tranny would fail right on the Denver freeway.

I've had a 2000 Bonne where the tranny suddenly died and it would cost $2k to fix, so if this car's tranny died I would have left the car there and done a rental car. Anyhow, I proceeded on to Wyoming and went through five mountain passes with no problems, I'm assuming, because the mountain air is cooler plus I wasn't in stop and go traffic, except for Yellowstone Park, where in stop and go traffic it began shifting hard in the lower gears. So for the rest of my trip I avoided city driving and tranny performed fine, But every time I got caught in heavy traffic and the fluids were warm from the driving during the day, the hard shifting reoccurred.
