About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
Cause unknown. Noticed problem sometime in 2017. Car rattles (in front of car) off and on. Determined it's not the wheels or tires. Rattling comes and goes. Driver can make the rattling go away by changing speeds or with a slight turn of the steering wheel either left or right. (e.g. lane change) diagnosis was that the problem was neither a tire nor rack and pinion problem.

I was driving 30 mph and the steering mechanism went out. It affected my ability to control turning my vehicle. It is not safe to drive. I checked online to find out that many cars including my cars year, make, and model are being recalled. I contacted my local dealer who informed me that my VIN has not been recalled as of yet. Please advise as soon as possible.

Complete loss of power steering. In 2010 there was a recall and the power steering motor was replaced. Now I was told, by the company, that I have to pay for the repair.

The power steering warning light comes on and there is a sudden loss of power steering assist. You will just be driving down the road, city street or interstate and the car will ding, " the power steering light comes on" and you are without power steering. The previous 2 times, my son stated he was able to pull to the side of the interstate, turn the vehicle off, wait a few minutes, turn it back on and it was fine. That is not the case since 2/10/2016, there is no power steering. There is a recall for this year, make and model but I am told it is not under the recall. How is that possible" it is doing everything the recall states, it is one of the makes and models specified and yet I am being told it is not covered under the recall" this is my son's car, he could have been killed. Without the power steering, it takes great effort to turn and you definitely cannot make any tight turns, it was all we could do to get it home. My son stated it has done this twice in the past 6 months.

I will be driving and all of a sudden a lost power steering. This happened on a left turn where I was not ready to perceive no power steering and came very close to an accident. This should not happen and there should be a recall on these cars. Also I have a parasitic battery drain which started after the ignition key was changed for the third time. This time they had to reprogram car and key. This happen in Oct 2014. Please reply to my email. My son was driving a 2009 Pontiac G5 in a high school parking lot at approximately 40mph +/- and went to make sudden turn when the power steering completely failed. He slammed on the brakes and even pulled the E-brake to no avail and hit a block wall. As a result of this accident he sustained neck and back injuries as well as other bumps and bruises. The vehicle hit the wall at approximately a 20 degree angle hitting the driver side front corner at the headlight area. The impact resulted in major damage to the front corner panel, hood, driver door, radiator, and possible bent frame. After backing the car away from the wall the power steering started working again but with loss of fluids the vehicle had to be towed away and my son getting checked out for his injuries. The vehicle is equipped with on-star but it failed to acknowledge the impact sensors and did send any type of message or response. The air bags did not deploy either. We did receive a recall notice about the power steering unit but it did not say the vehicle would have a complete loss of steering. The notice did not say to quit driving the vehicle until a fix was in place so we thought it was still safe to drive. It is my understanding now that this problem has been going on for years. Why didn't the dealer have to inform us before we bought it. I will never put my son in that car again fixed or not.
