This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Pontiac dealer.
I purchased this Pontiac G6 in 2008 used. At the time, the vehicle had approximately 30,000 miles. Within the first year I noticed my cruise control would stop working. At the time I was unaware that my brake lights were also malfunctioning. I realized this malfunction after being notified by a random person driving behind me on the road. She notified me that when I pressed the brake my lights would not illuminate and when I was not pressing the brake pedal, they were illuminating.
A complete reversal. After some research, I realized this was a common problem and there was a recall issued. When I contacted my local dealership I was notified that although my car was the same make and model, it was a GTP and was not covered in the recall. Eventually the dealership decided to perform the recall procedures which only temporarily corrected the problem. Since that original fix, I have had the brake module changed three or four times, taken to two dealerships and also to a trusted mechanic. No one can get the problem corrected. I am now told there is a chance it is the body control module.
I am so tired of spending money to correct a defect in this vehicle with on guarantee of a fix. This car is dangerous to drive and General Motors needs to correct this problem.

my brake lights have never worked properly. THey stay on when I'm driving and turn off when I press on the brakes. I have been stopped countless times by the cops but I always explain and they just let me go. I know its dangerous but I have no money to get them fixed. I am a single mom of a baby, going to college, and can hardly wait for the day when I can trade this lemon in!!!

This is the same issue I have read so many others are having. Brake lights are on when you arent using the brakes and go off when you try to use them!
Im just waiting to get hit from behind while driving at night and this problem starts!

I am having the same problem I've read a lot of other people have had. The brake lights come on when I'm not depressing the brakes bu,t what's worse is they don't come on when I'm actually braking.
This has been an intermittent problem that I've dealt with for several years. I've had the Brake Pedal Position Sensor replaced, replaced the EBCM, and had the BPP re-calibrated. Some of these things seemed to have fixed the problem temporarily...or did they? It's an intermittent problem so who knows. The funny thing is, there IS an actual recall for this exact problem for 2006 Pontiac G6s but somehow my VIN doesn't fall in the recall so they won't do anything about it. What the what?!? It's bad enough that it's not covered under the recall but at this point I'd just like to get it fixed. But no one can even seem to do that.

I was pulled over three times last year by highway patrol and asked why I was riding my brakes. I finally figured out that my brake lights were on while I was driving, and would go off when I pressed the brakes. If I sat at a stop light for very long, the brake lights would then come back on, only to stay on when I gave it gas.
After a week at the shop, the dealer replaced the BCM, or body control module, and the lights worked fine. Until now, a year later. The replacement part has a short in it again, and I'm having the same problem, only now I'm not covered by the standard warranty, so I was told it would cost almost $900, parts and labor, to have fixed.
I'm currently researching the problem, which is how I found this site, and will try calling GMC-Pontiac's customer complaint hotline to see if I can't get some help. At least that's the plan.
Thanks so much for providing this outlet!

An unknown person was following me on the interstate, when I stopped for gas he let me know, that my brake lights were staying on. Now they either stay on, flash intermittently or won't come on at all. Most of the time they won't come on when you apply the brakes. We were using the car's radio for an outdoor event one day, and the brake light just came on while no one was in the car and just the radio was playing.
Update from Jul 15, 2009: I found a recall on some of these cars. Of course mine does not fall into that category. The GM Recall Bulletin No. 08317. There is an electrical plug that corrodes and causes all of the problems I am having with my G6.

Same issue as before at 80,000. When I press on my brake pedal the lights don't illuminate, when I don't press the pedal the lights illuminate.
