The instrument cluster displays the check oil light guage as on even though the oil level is fine. I continue to check the oil but I have always maintained my car in excellent condition. This is dangerous though because the user will not be able to know if the car did develop a large oil leak. The check oil light would be on but it has always been on. The engine could seize or an accident could occur. I do know that there is a technical service bulletin already published which describes this same problem on this year and make of Pontiac.

Had tried to start vehicle, would not turn over, and there was no clicking noise. Left vehicle parked. Earlier had smelled plastic burning. Went and contacted dealership. Heard horn blowing. Checked and noticed windows were dark. Opened driver's door and smoke came billowing out of dashboard and steering column. Flames started to shoot out of column. Notified fire department who put flames out.

The car was driven for 8 minutes and parked. I went back to the car 3 1/2 hours later and found the passenger side burned up. Apparently a fire ignited in the electrical wiring under the dash while the car was parked. The dash board, controls, wiring, and steering wheel were all melted. The windshield had cracked from the heat. The visor fell on the seat and burned the seat. I have pictures of the damage. I am waiting on a formal report from the insurance claim.
