Does this mean my ABS isn't working either? What's up with the endless electrical issues?!!! I am ready to get rid of this hassle.

Grand Am SE 3.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 168,000 miles

The minute I bought my car and pulled out of the lot these lights came on. Just take it to Auto Zone they will check it for you (for free!!) they will most likely tell you it is your O2 sensor. Now there is 2 of them so make sure you remember what one it is. the part is around $70 to fix but you have to pull the whole top motor off to replace it so at a shop it can get pricey.

Grand Am 2.4L 4 cyl

The only problem is that I fix vehicles myself and for friends. But as I look for the ABS control module in part stores, it seem that Pontiac doesn't allow part stores to sell the product. They only allow you to buy the part from their dealers. In this particular situation the module doesn't allow the back breaks to opperate at all causing the vehicle to sometimes swerve around corners or to fishtail or total loss of control on sometimes hard stops. It seems to me that coorperation that should put safety first, would allow more access to an item detrimental to safety for it's drivers and passengers to it's vehicles. It appears that life has a price tag if you wish to drive their vehicles. Being a GM fan, this is very disapointing. : (

Grand Am GT V6

I've read of similiar occurrances here - the ABS light & Trac light come on randomly, disabling the ABS & Stabilitrak system. THis started the last time I had the brakes done. Went back to the shop 4 times to see if they could find the problem. On the 2nd visit, they said I had a bad wheel bearing, and that was triggering the Trac issue. Replaced the bearing, fixed the problem. For about 10 days. Went back, no one can seem to resolve this. consequently, I'm burning thru the brakes pads like nothing.

Recently, I had the brakes done AGAIN (free pads, and rebuilt the calipers for free) and it fixed the problem. For about 10 days. Now the brake pedal will occasionally jerk & stutter, feels like they're giving out. Have an appointment scheduled with the dealer this time - maybe they can figure it out.

Grand Am SE 3.4L V6

Ok so I have been having this same ABS/TRAC OFF lights problem often. It used to happen just once in while, but now it happens annoyingly often. I just took my car into the shop for a new Fuel Tank censor, which by the way didn't even cost me $ 300, so if you have that problem don't let a mechanic rip you off. They saw the TRAC OFF and ABS lights go on when they were just turning the car, they said it could very well just be censors that when they get bumped and turning the lights on, or it could be a bad connection. I will be taking my car back into the same shop soon to have the problem more closely looked at. I'll keep you updated.

Update from Jun 8, 2009: I've had some people asking me in the last couple of months if I ever figured out what to do about this ABS and TRAC lights problem. All I can tell you is that my mechanic let me know it may be a censor problem, but I have not gotten it fixed so I can tell you for sure. But my tranny is dying and I already fixed my gasket leak. So I would suggest you just trade it in ASAP if you started having these problems.
