My wife purchased a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am in 1999. For the last two years, we have been experiencing problems like the steering wheel making sounds when we turn the wheel, brake lights burn out frequently, fuses on back lights are shorted out with signs of melted metal, water gets into the trunk and collects. We have spoke to the dealer as well as several mechanics about these problems and we are told these are common problems with this type of car. I found out that by going in on any search engine and typing in "1999 Pontiac Grand Am problems", there are thousands of complaints with the same problems. The manufacturer denies any problems.

Coolant system- intake manifolds. Dealer advised the intake manifold is leaking. Vehicle has 90K miles (highway). Dealer advised the coolant will mix with the engine oil causing a catastrophic failure. See many other complaint regarding the same replacement on 3.4 liter engines. Previously have replaced both R/L hub bearings, alternator, starter, drivebelt, power steering pump and return line, and radio.

I have had a lot of problems with my 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT. I have replaced 2 power steering pumps, and a power steering rack within the first two years of owning the vehicle. With the power steering pump going out, an accident could have been caused. I know several other people that the pump had went out on them, and also had it replaced. I contacted Pontiac, and they would not do anything about it. They said since my vehicle was not under warranty, that they would not do anything. The first repair was replaced under warranty, the second was not. The rack was also not under warranty.

Consumer has had the steering pump replaced 4 times. Rack was leaking, and another leak was found. Dealer said nothing was wrong with vehicle. Vehicle was being repaired under warranty. Also, transmission was slipping, and there was a transmission leak about 4 months ago. Dealer was suppose to have repaired the problems, but the problems keep reoccurring. The horn malfunctions after being repaired twice. The fog lights are holding moisture. Speaker on passenger side failed. Radio sisplay is scrambled due to internal short. Right rear power window was inoperative due to switch failure. Trunk release inoperative due to chaffed wire. Transmission oil was leaking due to axle seal failure.

Power steering pump- a few weeks after I bought my car I noticed a cavitating noise coming from the pump. The dealership found the pump to be defective and replaced it with a new one. No more problems since. Intake gasket- I could smell oil burning when I was stopped, and noticed oil puddles on the engine. The dealership found the intake gasket leaking. They gasket was replaced. At this present time, I can still smell oil burning and have since returned the car to the dealership. They are looking further into the problem.
