Grand Am 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 33,000 miles
Power steering failure, shaft in power steering unit was worn so badly that it broke. G M states that the part is not defective and repairs are more than five hundred dollars, only 33,000 miles on vehicle, but warrenty has timed out. This is a safety issue because I cannot steer vehicle without power assist steering, so vehicle is not driveable untill repaired.

Car was running fine and the next minute there was a popping noise (like I busted a hose or something) when I turned it on. I looked on the ground and power steering fluid was running every where and leaked all out within a matter of minutes. Then I tried to move the car out of the drive way and the steering wheel was so tough to turn that it felt like the wheel was locked up. Now I have to get a new power steering pump, a return hose, and a serpentine belt, and the to top it off it is not under warranty anymore. I was very lucky that it did not happen in the middle of a road though. What a way to start the new year!
