About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
This is my procedure of start engine. Turn on the key, I can see the sign of security. Wait 10minutes until lights off. Turn off the key and start the engine. That is too annoying me. I already towed my car 3 times and replace the fuel pump. It costs $500. Is that not serious? recently it occurs too often!!!

My 2001 Pontiac Grand Am acts like it is out of gas and the solution is to wait for 10 minutes with the ignition in the on position for 10 minutes and the security is bypassed and then the car can be started. GM doesn't know why and has no fix. I had it towed the first time not knowing fuel pump, what?

The contact owns a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am. The contact turned the ignition, but the vehicle would not start. She called a local dealer and the fuel pump was replaced, however, the failure recurred a couple of years later. She smelled gas fumes periodically and the service engine light remained illuminated. The security light illuminated sporadically as well. The powertrain was unknown. The current mileage was 67,944 and failure mileage was 300.

I bought a used 2001 Pontiac Grand Am in February 2002. The cruise control went out on the car in January 2003. After numerous attempts to get this fixed at the dealer I finally gave up. Shortly afterwards the fuel pump had to be replaced (spring 2003). Since that time I've had to replace the fuel pump twice last fall. Now its gone out again. What can I do? the car has an evident electrical problem.

Where to start...I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am. Within 2 months of buying it, my fuel pump & computer went out at the same time. Next was my water pump & timing chain. Then was the security system, then the turn signals, then the windows wouldn't roll down. And now my brakes are having to be replaced on a consistent basis. The only thing covered by GM was the turn signal switch. All other replacements were at my expense. After researching on this site, I see numerous complaints of the same kind. I notified GM and they refused to help at all. I explained that since there are multiple complaints for the same things, it has to be a manufacturing defect. They shrugged that off. They finally sent me a letter stating that they would no longer "entertain" any of my comments or complaints. Do not buy a Pontiac!!! junk city!!!

I purchased my 2001 Grand Am in Aug of 2005 and have so far had the passlock go out on me twice and had to replace the fuel pump system as well. The first time I replaced the passlock was only two months ago and yesterday I got in my car to go to the grocery store and it wouldn't start. I have done research on this problem and it seems to be a common and extensive problem in this particular year. I am a single mother and can't afford to have my car taken to the mechanic every time this goes wrong - there needs to be a recall on the passlock!!! or Pontiac should have some kind of reimbursement for this problem.

Had the vehicle in the shop 4 times for the same thing, when getting into vehicle to start it will not start. Everything dealer said to try worked. Had to turn it on acceleration for 10 minutes until everything stopped flashing, and turn off.then turn back on and it will start. First time fuel injector/ second fuel pump, and last two times it was the security system. Now it was doing the same thing again.

The steering wheel was hard to turn. It felt like it did not have any power steering fluid. The dealership was unable to locate the cause of the problem because the power steering fluid was full and there was no cuts or breaks in the fluid line. Also at 82,000 miles the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was towed to the dealership. The dealership indicated this occurred because of a malfunction in the fuel pump system. Please provide additional information.

I have a 2001 Grand Am GT and it has problems starting sometimes. It has had a fuel pump, solonoids, and a new starter put in it within the past 2 weeks and nothing seems to be fixing the problem and I've only had the car for 2 months!!
