It looks like my transmission lasted longer than others. It still sucks when my repair guy tells me this is a known issue with Grand Am's. Being so old I was a little hesitant to get it fixed but no car payments for a couple more years will be nice (hopefully).
Basically it started off with the transmission being a little jerky an not shifting into OD.

I posted on this site that I had to replace the transmission on my Grand Am at 96,000kms. Now 2 years later and 60,000kms later, the transmission failed again...
I am so frustrated with this vehicle that I decided to trade the vehicle in. It is pretty bad when I trust my 1994 Mazda over my 2004 Grand Am....

Was driving in town, stopped at a light and the car wouldn't move. Got it towed to a transmission shop to be told that the transmission case has been cracked in half. Something internal let go. Had to rebuild the transmission completely.

Okay I thought GM vehicles were built to last?

I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am I bought it used with 10,900 miles on. Recently my engine light came on and I had it diagnosed at two different places, I was told that I need to rebuild or replace the transmission. I called the Pontiac manufacturing company to get some help on this since I only had the car 1 Year. The cost to repair is $1900.00 or replace @ $2900.00. I was told that this was a premature condition in the transmission and that was a manufacturer defect in the transmission. But instead of getting any help from the dealership or the manufacturer I am stuck with a car that has a bad transmission, bad window and I have to change the coolant in this car soon or I'll have Coolant problems too. You see on the doors and windows of the dealerships THAT OUR TOP PRIORITY IS THE CUSTOMER AND TO SATISFY THE CUSTOMERS. THATS A BUNCH OF S.... THEY DON'T TAKE CARE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS THEY JUST WANT TO RIP US OFF. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER PONTIAC AGAIN FROM THEM OR ANYONE ELSE. IF THEY STAND BEHIND THEIR CARS THEN I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO BE REPLACING MY TRANSMISSION AT 80,000 MILES ESPECIALLY WHEN THIS CAR HAS NEVER BEEN DRIVEN HARD. I WILL START BUYING FOREIGN MADE CARS SINCE THEY STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS AND KEEP THEIR CUSTOMERS HAPPY.

I lost all forward gears on my car and only had reverse. The mechanic replaced it with a salvaged transmission.
