A faulty crankshaft position sensor caused the loss of steering and braking on numerous occasions until the problem was diagnosed. The same conditions as a faulty ignition switch. Yet the crankshaft sensor is common on all autos. Thus all autos that use a crankshaft sensor are unsafe.[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Vehicle began to run rough. Then immediately lost power steering and stalled. The engine died followed by flames from under both sides of the hood. No smoke was seen before the fire began. No lights came on to indicate a problem. In no time, the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames. The car was a total loss.

The steering gets extremely difficult when turning to the left. It's as if there is no power steering. It is intermittent, which makes it very unsafe to turn the car, not knowing when it's going to happen. I have not taken steps to correct the failure yet, waiting for GM to repair under a recall similar to 1997 and 1998's.

My 1999 Pontiac gran prix GT looses the power steering when turning left, right is ok. At a standstill, it is nearly impossible to turn left so the car has to be in motion to turn. It is not smooth, but jerky and the force varies thru the turn. It is definetly a handful on a windy day, when more effort is required in one direction than the other. I haven't been to a dealer yet, because they can't squeeze me in on a day I'm not traveling.

My vehicle, a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, loses power steering when turning left (only left turns - not right turns). It is extremely difficult to make a left hand turn. I need to pull hard with both hands to get my steering wheel to turn. Sometimes when the steering does not respond, I am forced to discontinue my left turn, put my car in reverse, back up the vehicle, and try again because the steering does not work when turning left. On more than one occasion I have almost hit another vehicle because the steering wheel has not responded while I was driving. I have called the GM owner hotline several times to no avail. Of interest. The 1998 Grand Prix is being recalled for this exact same problem. After several phone calls to GM, they have still not even agreed to look at my vehicle. I took it upon myself to bring my vehicle to an accredited GM Pontiac retailer and I paid to have the vehicle looked at and the problem diagnosed. The man at the dealership provided a written quote describing the problem that the 1998 Grand Prix is being recalled. Unfortunately, GM won't listen to me because my vehicle is a 1999, which is not being recalled.

Steering mechanism is not functioning properly. Vehicle has variable steering which is loose for city driving and sturdy for highway driving. Mechanism is working the opposite, and is very dangerous while driving. Vehicle checked by dealer, who advised consumer that vehicle does not have variable steering. Consumer knows vehicle has mechanism because it has worked properly in the past.
