The problem I had with my transmission is that is just stopped while I was at a red light. I tried to go forward and the car decided it did not want to go forward. It was rush hour in GA and of course, I was upset but I managed to get out of the road by backing the car up to a tire shop. By default, I had a tow truck number in my cell and had them pick the car up. We took the car to the Pontiac dealership and left it there since it was after hours for the service shop. When I went back the next day to inform them of the problem, they told me it would cost about $1800-2100. I informed them that I had an extended warranty and that is when I found it to be a problem because then they said they wanted to place a rebuilt transmission in and I said, NO! I do not pay for an extended warranty to have used parts on my car. Therefore, they had to honor my request. Now, after about 160,000 miles, I have had to replace the transmission again with no extended warranty. However, it did not cost a whole lot because my friend knows a lot about cars and got me a good deal on a transmission and someone to fix it. I think in all, I paid 850 transmission and labor.

I've owned my grand prix since 2001 when it had 30,000 miles on it. It has had no problems until this. For the last year or so the car would rev a little strangely when shifting into overdrive. Then, recently, overdrive went out completely, meaning I had to be at like 3000 rpms just to stay at freeway speeds. The mechanic that fixed my car said it is a defect on this model transmission, and they almost all go out between 75k and 85k miles. He even showed me the gear shaft, which had its chines stripped cleanly off. I know several other grand prix owners who have experienced this same problem, it is almost a guaranteed that your transmission will give out before it reaches 100k miles. I had the transmission rebuilt, and the car is back to running great, but be warned, if you plan to keep your car much past 70k miles, start saving your $2200 dollars now. I've heard this has been fixed on the recent models.

My problem is when i took my car to the dealer i spent 2000 dollars to check and repair my car and the dealer told me that the car is ok! It actually wasn't that they repaired unnecessary things and changed unnecessary parts not the transmission even though they never considered it as a transmission problem. Their diagnosis was wrong but they didn't accept it, In Canada there is no proper place for complaints. Later my car got worse and worse I took it to another GMC dealer they got the diagnosis right but it is going to cost me around $3600. Is there anyway I can take my first money from the other company. This is not justice that there are a lot of unqualified technicians are in the sector. My understanding is this companies are changing their qualified technicians a lot not to pay them more.
