About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
My daughter lost control of the vehicle on the evening of 11/9/16 in the rain in an "S" curve, sliding into and hitting a tree. The accident was significant enough for the car to be totaled; however, the air bags did not deploy for her nor the passenger. They both sustained some injuries to the head due to the air bags not deploying. My concern is to report the defect. There is no recall for my VIN.

I was in heavy traffic, the car in front of me stopped suddenly and I hit her from behind. My front end has a lot of damage, to the point that my radiator was leaking fluid. I am unsure how fast we were traveling, I will say around 30 mph. My air bag did not deploy.

After swerving to miss a dump truck who slammed on their brakes, my vehicle went off the road, through the median, crossed both North bound lanes of traffic (miraculously not hitting another vehicle) and slammed head first into the guardrail. Thankfully I did not get badly hurt (just rash burn from my seatbelt and whiplash) but I was very surprised, and very concerned, that my air bags did not deploy. I had to have hit the guardrail going at least 50 or 60 mph. Luckily this accident was not as bad as it most certainly could have been, especially considering I was on a major highway during morning rush hour traffic. However, I hope that other folks who drive this vehicle have working air bags that would deploy in the event of a serious accident. It was very scary and disheartening that mine failed to work for me. Needless-to-say, I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone else!

I parked our car in front of our house on Saturday afternoon and when I went to get in it on Sunday morning the whole inside with covered in yellow dust. The glove compartment was open but the dash was intact. I called the police dept and along with the haz mat team from the fire department they determined that is was the air bag and somehow it exploded and ripped open within the dash causing all the dust that was inside of it to come out through the vents and into the interior of the car. My entire car all the way to the back windows is covered by this powder. Also when the insurance adjuster looked at it he stated that the air bag light is not showing that anything is wrong with the air bag! this is the passenger side air bag. If this would have happened while we were driving it would have been horrific! my auto insurance is not going to cover it as it is mechanical and the dealership will not do anything as the car is out of warranty. I am still waiting to hear back from Pontiac. Updated 09/05/12 updated 09/10/2012

2006 Pontiac Torrent driver airbag did not deploy during rear collision. Wires in drivers door were broken which seems to be common problem with this model. Not sure if these wires control airbag or not but power windows and doors stopped working, various dash lights go on and off at various times. The wiring harness appears to be installed too tightly causing the wires to stretch when the door is opened and closed. Google "2006 Pontiac Torrent wiring harness" to find that this is not uncommon.

I have a 2006 Pontiac Torrent, that is/was driven by my son who was on his way home from work. The highway he was driving on has a speed limit of 65 mph, with a leniency of going 70 mph. Well there is construction of repaving the highway, well not all of the repaving was done especially getting onto the off ramp which has a high 2-3 inch drop off of asphalt. Approx. 1/4 mile of the highway getting onto the off ramp which was not paved completely still having the 2-3 inch drop off of asphalt. While my son was crossing over to get onto the off ramp, the paved drop off grabbed one or both of the left driver tires, which caused a steering and control problem to cause him to over correct onto a grassy dirt area on his right. He hit a tire mark that was left there from other accidents in the same area while the dirt was wet. As he hit this previous tire mark, he rolled the car three times. He was wearing his seat belt thank god, and having his seat slightly leaned back the seat belt locked and prevented him from hitting the steering wheel. However, the 2006 Pontiac Torrent has a rollover sensor that the car has as part of the security package, as well as onstar. As the car rolled the sensor did not sense the car rolling which resulted in not one of the air bags this car has was ever deployed at the time of car rolling to protect my son, which would be driver and passenger air bags and side curtain air bags. I took pictures of the head liner hanging and the air bags still rolled up on the inside. And onstar never detected the accident to get emergency help for my son. A bystander called for help. Thanks to god my son was able to walk a way from his car with mild injuries from him wearing his seat belt in spite of the air bags and onstar not working. The paramedics were surprised from looking at the damage of his car that my son was able to get himself out and walk away thanks to the seat belt. As for the car it's totaled beyond repair.
