1500 4x4 Crew 5.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 38,525 miles

Truck would not start, battery only 3 years old. Disconnected battery and fully charged it, works for a few weeks then all of a sudden it requires a boost to start. Alternator is providing 14volts. Not sure that the battery is bad because it will start fine once then the next day it will not even turn over.

Drove 840 km, after charging battery for 12 hours, and it started a dozen times, then the fourth day when it was +10C, it would not start after sitting for half an hour. My son was trying to program my phone to the Uconnect in the truck, but when the phone book was downloaded some telephone numbers were transferred incorrectly. After this the battery seemed to be drained and would not turn the engine over to start.

Update from Dec 11, 2014: Morning after driving 840 km home the battery was dead and would not start, engine would not turn over. Turned the vehicle off at Hana, Alberta Dodge dealer and they boosted it forfree, then drove the next 6.5 hours home without shutting truck off. Towed to Riverside Dodge, and two days later, they have ordered a replacement battery, which is a remedy for the symptom, but might not be a long term fix. Chrysler Customer service rep, Tina, has followed up with me, and Riverside service rep is responsive, but this is the fourth time the vehicle has been to a dealer for diagnosis. I suspect problem is the battery maintainer circuit in the TIPM, the totally integrated power module, which from reading other complaints, is back ordered with Dodge by many months.

The truck was bought to take us cross country skiing, which requires leaving truck out of cell phone coverage for 3-4 hours. Truck is unreliable for this purpose. My wife will not drive our five month old truck!

Update from Dec 24, 2014: Chrysler Canada finally replaced my battery after two weeks. One would think they could have allowed the dealership to install an equivalent battery purchased locally!

However the new battery charged overnight at 2 Amps was down to 12.18 Volts, the voltage at which Cessna says a battery should be replaced, after the truck sat for four days. So the problem is not fixed, a temporary treatment had been applied. It will only be a matter of time until this new battery is also ruined. Right now it is only a few degrees below freezing, but normal temperatures for January go down to -40 for a week or so; then we will know more.

Had to boost the battery to start the truck in Calgary. Drove 2h15min to Hanna, and doubting that the vehicle would start, parked in front of the Dodge dealership. Shut off the engine long enough to go to the toilet, and the battery would not turn the engine over. Dealer boosted for a start. Drove 6.5 h on highway at a bit over 100 km/h and did not shut off vehicle until it is in my home driveway.

After 9 h of driving on the highway yesterday, the truck would not start this morning. Nor would it start after 2 h following a boost to start. It got boosted twice yesterday.

My wife will not drive this 6 month old truck because it is not reliable to start, even though it has not stopped on the road yet.

It had to be boosted this morning to get it out of gear to be loaded on the flat deck tow truck.
